www.hardcoregaming101.net/pengo/pengo.htmHere's another not-quite-done article that I've had sitting around, so may as well post it. The major thing that's holding up finalizing this article is that I discovered there's like a bazillion Pengo clones out there. I had no clue, one Commodore 64 site actually listed Pengo-clones as its own genre, and that's not including the more recent ones! I don't think I want to cover them all in depth, but I'd like to at least catalogue them and stick in a screenshot or two. Anyway, I love Pengo, it's easily my favorite of Sega's early arcade games, and it long baffled me at how stingy Sega was with its ports. Why was there nothing for the Master System? Such a shame, Pengo is so much better than Penguin Land...

Makes me think of "don't pull", a similar arcade game by Capcom. Maybe it was inspired by Pengo.

You should mention Ninku Gaiden:Hiroyuki Daikatsugeki for the Game Gear. Based on some anime.

Geez it's been almost a year and I almost completely forgot about this! It was never officially posted. Would anyone be willing to do some research to dig up as many Pengo clones as possible? Don't need full reviews, just names/platforms/screenshot or two. These are the Commodore 64 clones alone: www.gb64.com/search.php?a=5&f=5&id=170&d=18

If I may ask, why do we need the clones for this? We don't really do that for many arcade games unless there's something really notable about them, do we?
...Crap, I actually forgot I wrote this.

Pengo's a weird case, just due to the sheer volume of the clones it inspired. It only ever got like, what, three official ports or so, and the rest are all shameless ripoffs. Usually we cover shameless ripoffs, it's just that there are so many of them, probably due to Sega not licensing it out (or not being aware it was so popular).

The Camputers Lynx is another unsuccessful British computer of the early 80s. There was some issue with the hardware that made it rather unsuitable for games, I don't recall the specifics, something related to the way the screen is drawn I think. I recalled there were also Pengo variants for the Dragon/CoCo computers, and found there's actually a group listing at Moby: www.mobygames.com/game-group/pengo-variants

Oh yeah, I have the Pengo (and Fantasy Zone) LCD games, though I've never actually taken them out of their packages. I kinda want that X360 Pengo game but I'm not a fan of Triangle Service's stuff...not enough to justify the full 6800 at lease.
