Any aspiring sound engineers out there? Anyone who thinks the GC9X podcasts sound like garbage and knows he or she can do better? OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS.
As you may have noticed, the delay between the end of a month and release that month's podcast is getting pretty ridiculous. (Although we have stuck to our one-podcast-a-month plan for over a year and a half now.) Although we all feel like we're too busy to work faster, the real reason is that none of us likes trimming 2+ hours of rambling conversation down to 50 minutes. We don't really know what we're doing, and we're not good at editing our own work.
If you actually know something about how to make a good-sounding podcast, and if you would really enjoy contributing to HG101 by lending us your time and talents, INQUIRE WITHIN. You'll draw the same non-salary as me, and receive sole billing as the "Podcast Editor/Director" even if I work on it with you. And if you're REALLY good, I'll just hand over the "producer" reigns to you: you'll be able to recreate the sound/feel/content of future GC9X podcasts. Communications majors, this is something you can put on your resume.
The only hard-and-fast requirement is that you have the time/patience/enthusiasm to finish a podcast seven days or less. Post samples of your work on other projects, or PM it to me if you're too shy.

He's essentially asking us not to edit the podcast. Edit: For those wondering why we even edit the podcast, the major reason is because we read from a script. Often times we'll flub lines or have to do multiple retakes. In other cases, there's a lot of dead air as we try to compose our thoughts during a portion that isn't scripted. I honestly feel the podcasts are much better when tightly edited, but I can understand if others disagree.

Just put that goddamn 2+ hours rambling for Chirst sakes.... Fuck....ehhh If most of our listeners really want less structure and more off-topic conversation, I'll try it. The problem is, although server traffic shows a lot of people are downloading HG101's podcasts, we don't get a lot of feedback. I'd love to hear what regular listeners thought of the Home Improvement episode, which was completely unedited. Until then, I'll stick to our current format. We're trying to distinguish ourselves among the dozens of other retro game podcasts by being focused and fact-intensive, just like HG101 itself. The shows I admire and aspire to are those like Retronauts and Chrontendo, which pick a premise and stick with it. Also, if anyone is really THAT hungry for unfiltered GC9X-esque chatter, Snarboo and the gang stream games and conversations all the time. Bobinator is doing a semi-regular thing right now called "GC9X Game's Night (sic)" But they also stream all kinds of stuff on an almost nightly basis. The best way to stay in the loop is to lurk in our IRC channel: irc.psigenix.net #gc9x

I'd love to hear what regular listeners thought of the Home Improvement episode, which was completely unedited. Maybe that was the reason that particular episode couldn't ever hold my attention... so yeah, I definitely prefer an edited podcast.

It was very raw but I liked Home Improvement episode a lot. I listen to 3-4 hours long podcasts, so the length is never an issue for me, on the contrary.

It's good to hear some feedback from the fresh blood, much appreciated fellas.
OK, here's another question for you all - do you have a favorite episode (outside of that Home Improvement liveshow, I mean)?
My favorites of the ones I've been involved with (in no particular order) were the Wonder Boy, Hybrid Heaven, and Wonder Project ones. Those are the ones where I felt confident about my level of buzzed/drunkness.

Hey, is there an issue with the blog comments? I'd posted a comment on the one GC9x thread last week but it hasn't been approved/appeared yet...I swear it didn't say anything negative!!!

I definitely prefer the edited podcasts over the unedited ones. Also, while I'm not a sound engineer, so I can't volunteer to edit the various sound channels, I will say that you need to do some equalization for the voices, as (and I don't remember exact names for who's who), some of you are so quiet that you're barely audible, while others are at a very reasonable volume, so often I spend the podcast cranking up the volume and dropping it back down, depending on who is talking.
Other then that sound issue, the podcast is great! Keep up the good work!

I'm probably the quiet one. Sorry! That's mostly just how my voice is. I've tried pushing the gain up on my mic, but it just distorts everything. This is one of those issues that I think could be solved by someone who really knew what they were doing.

I know on at least one episode I came out really quiet (not sure which one(s)) because I'd moved the mic on my headset during a break.

When I used to produce the old HG101 podcast, I would go through the entire thing and manually the raise the volume of anyone who was speaking too quietly (or lower anyone that was too loud). This tended to take a very long time.

This tended to take a very long time. We usually do a mic check at the beginning of each podcast, maybe we need to do that between segments. As for xerxes' voice, I think it's just so smooth and calm that peoples' brains are being fooled into thinking it's quieter than it is.
