I never really got into Space Harrier, but I do like one or two of it's clones. So far I have found these games:
3-D WorldRunner (NES) JJ - Tobidase Daisakusen Part II (Famicom) YamYam (SFC) ~ Gamefaqs has a faq for this. Animal Attack Gakuen (Famicom) ~ This is actualy pretty good. Cosmic Epsilon (Famicom) ~ Best Space Harrier clone ever. Awesome game. Very recommended. I even found cheat codes for it. Up, down, left, right, A, down, up, left, right, B on the title screen for "Another World mode". Up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, start on the title screen for a hidden message. A, B, Right, Left, Right, Left, Down, Down, Up, Up on the title screen for level select.
Are there any other Space Harrier clones?

Check out Feedback for the MSX computer. A little low tech, but still pretty cool for a MSX game.

If by Space Harrier clone you mean an on-rails shooter, Panzer Dragoon, Zwei, and Orta are the best of the breed, absolutely no question in my mind.
Galaxy Force 2 is also pretty sweet; I keep hearing rumors that an arcade perfect version will finally be released for the PS2 soon under the Sega Ages line in Japan.
After Burner is also cool, though it's too frantic for it to be that much fun for me. It's more like a crazy ride more than anything.

Burning Force for the Arcade/Sega Genesis (Mega Drive). I personally like it better than Space Harrier II on the Sega Genesis :/
Panorama Cotton also comes to mind

If you don't mind firing up MAME, I can recommend the Thunder Ceptor games (both by Namco). There's also HAL Laboratory's HyperZone for SNES/SFC (for some reason, the English and Japanese versions of the game feature different logos and level sets), as well as Zaxxon 3D for the Master System.
And of course, you can't forget Space Fantasy Zone for the PCE-CD.

The Night Striker games may (loosely) apply... Night Striker S (Saturn) comes to mind... I had it for a while and enjoyed it somewhat.

Speaking of 3-D World Runner, has anyone ever played the original Japanese version called Tobidase Daisakusen for the Famicom Disk System? Also, is the music on that version better sounding?

Which one was it that square made? 3-D World Runner ( Tobidase Daisakusen in Japan). They also made Rad Racer ( Highway Star in Japan), which was based on another classic Sega arcade game called Out-Run

Note: J.J. is NOT smoking. He's just taking a quick nap.
I like these kinds of games. Hmm, I think I have a few on X68000 coming (Geograph Seal might be one). There's one on SFC (along with others, I don't know them all) with some clunky 3D rendered loops called Accelbrid or Accele Brid (GoodSNES name). Cute, crisp graphics on enemies though.
Slightly different type of game, but I also like Space Bazooka (Battle Clash) and the other semi-Dynamite Duke-like games on the system that used the Super Scope (Destructive, aka Bazooka Blitzkrieg in the states). Dunno about Yoshi's Safari, but that's another. Probably something like Duck Hunt. On the NES, who could forget Freedom Force?

Digital Press is down, and GameFAQs doesn't list a Japanese release. Apparently none was released, then. Damn, look at these reviews: www.gamefaqs.com/console/snes/review/588482.htmlMetal Combat, from the little I've played, is basically the stereotypical later Nintendo game: Lots of colors, a bit of hand-holding in the training mode to let you learn the game, and pretty solid gameplay based around a unique gameplay mechanic. A very decent game overall!
