The other thread on dated graphics got me thinking about this one. Which games from the current gen (PS2/xbox/GC) do you think will stand the test of time and be looked upon as absolute classics, kinda the way games such as SMB, SOTN, and Chrono Trigger are looked at? And, even more interestingly, which games that people think of as greats now will not be looked upon as absolute classics years down the road?
As for one game which will be an absolute classic, Shadow of the Colossus has my vote. Amazing atmosphere, visuals, solid gameplay only slightly marred by camera controls, and a gem of a soundtrack make this one of the greatest games I've ever played, bar none. It's the only game that actually made me feel alone and heroic as I battled the colossus, one after another.
On the other hand, Devil May Cry games would fall into the second category for me. I know it has its fans, and it did have decent control for the time and great graphics, but the camera was always annoying in that fixed position, and seems like a clunky action game to play even now.

Resident Evil 4 will most definitely be remembered. It's a sequel that takes the basic idea of it's predecessors and makes it into something truly FUN to play. Honestly, I don't think I've seen a sequel that's improved this much since Street Fighter II!

Super Smash Bros Melee, We Love Katamari, Dragon Quest VIII, Metal Gear Solid 3, and Timesplitters 3.
And none of those games was an XBox exclusive.

It'd be greatly ironic if Resident Evil 4 had remained a gamecube exclusive..easily one of the best games of the last few years and an exclusive for a console that no one cared much about really..still it's the superior version (espcially since the PC version is ported from the PS2 one which is utterly idiodic).
Eternal Darkness deserves a mention I think. And I may throw in an early guess at Dead Rising and to think about PC gaming possibly Warhammer:Dawn of War for reimaging (and popularing) the RTS genre (even though 7th legion did a very similar thing just way worse). Also I'd like to cast my vote in for possible up and coming classic Quake Wars: Enemy Territory which is easily the game I'm most anticipating atm and I'd say would still fall into this generation.
Classics that won't be remembered will include Kuri Kuri Mix, Zone of the Enders 2, Shadow of Rome. All great games that will find a home at hg101 eventually I think since they will fade into relative obscurity I'd say.

Okami is my pick of this generation. Simply sublime. It is now one of my top 10 games period.
Shadow of the Colossus is a VERY close second. The frame rate, though being something that I usually could care less about, takes it down a notch. Oh, and Okami was way beyond anyones' expectations.
My third would probably be Rez. I still play the game over 2 years later. Zen perfection.
As far as games that people love now, but will not be classics, you can put any first tier FPS in this generation in that slot that isn't Halo. Also, you can throw any of the DOA games in there next to the correct response of Devil May Cry.

I'm going to say Senko no Ronde because when two really good players go at it, it feels like you're watching a mecha anime without all of those stupid long-winded pauses in the action so the characters can verbally express their angst to the other character. That, and this is going to be the closest thing that'll play like Virtual On since Sega's given up on that franchise for the most part. This alone is going to make the game end up on this site sometime in the future, especially since ALMOST NOBODY knows about this game's existence . Yes, I know it's on the Xbox 360, but its original home was the NAOMI platform, which would've been on the Dreamcast if it wasn't for Microsoft offering G.Rev an opportunity to develop it for their next-gen system.

RE4 is indeed amazing. It cuts out all the fat that was in the previous RE games like the idiotic puzzles, search quests and terrible controls/camera, and turns it into, in my mind anyway, the best interactive movie game ever.
Ever since I've heard of Senko no Ronde in the shmups forums and seen the videos, I've been intrigued with this one. It's only too bad, though, that it's available for a Japanese 360, a system which I will likely never get.

I agree that Shadow of Rome is one incredible ancient roman adventure. The stealth sequences are good but the gladiator events make the game really shine.
All of the Onimusha games are stellar. The environments of Onimusha 3 really stand out. The Eiffel Tower level is such a bad ass area.
Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne = My favorite demonic RPG.
We cant foret Devil may Cry which put the classic 2D gameplay into a 3D world.

DMC1 & 3, Suikoden 3, Metroid Prime, Shadow of The Colossus, Viewtiful Joe, Zelda WW, Katamari Damacy, GGX2, Pikmin 2, SSBM, Disgaea, Onimusha 4, SMT3. All instant classics. I also see great potential in games like Okami, Valkyrie Profile 2 and DDS1-2 but I need to play them first P:

All I can really do is agree with everything that I own and has been said so far, as well as get that which I don't own but has been mentioned.
... oh, and is Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution not recent enough to qualify?
BTW... I'm surprised ICO hasn't been mentioned... I've heard nothing but praise for that game................... (and I haven't even played it myself, thereisaidit. >_<)

For me personally- Killer 7, I adore that game. It will at the very least be a cult classic imo. I'm dying to get some Killer 7 shirts printed up...anyone else interested? :\

If Devil May Cry had no sequels it would be considered a classic. Now all people can remember is DMC2 sucked cuz it's sucky, and DMC3 is unplayable. No one ever bitched about DMC1's camera. And not surprising, the same can be said about Metal Gear Solid and its sequels.

At least in my case, I don't think that's it at all. It's just that what games like DMC or Onimusha 1 were trying to do were done much better later on (ex. Ninja Gaiden for xbox did action much better) that I don't think they'll be remembered much later on. Plus, there's the case that I never even played DMC2...though I'll agree DMC3 was controller-busting crap.

Only if you suck at the particular mechanics, I breezed though the game with the multiple rod thing.
