I'd say something like Chivalry is an acceptable expansion on the genre. At its core it does similar things to The Super Spy but offers a lot more flexibility.

So I have to ask, and I can't really think of a good thread for it: Snarboo, Sotenga and Bobinator: Are you guys in a Retro FPS mood lately? I seem to notice a trend in your avatars.

It's mostly an injoke between us about the shadowy 'IRC cabal' that silently watches and judges your every action. ...But we would totally like to play a retro FPS, if it ended up on the vote!

Yeah, just as a full disclosure thing it's us being slightly petty about an actually petty comment made by someone on this board about how there's an evil cabal of people on the HG101 irc channel conspiring to shut down people that are not deemed worthy or whatever. This wasn't helped any when I made a joke comment about how the IRC channel's superior to the board. This is all bullshit of course. So we decided to make "evil" avatars and joking signatures about the "irc cabal." And as bob said, most of us are classic FPS fans. The true fact of the matter is that everyone's welcome and invited to chat on the irc channel, it's not a secret club or anything. I can't speak for the others, but I like the irc chat because it's a really convenient way to communicate in real time, and is essential for coordinating the podcast.

Makes some sense, although the Cultist is probably the more appropriate choice for that theme . I usually drop into the IRC from time to time when I'm participating in the monthly GC9x. In any case, you guys have given me an idea for a new Avatar. Bonus points for anyone who recognizes it.

I really wish Shadowcaster would come up for a GC9X vote. Such an underappreciated game!

After the previous episode had one of my favorite artworks, this definitely was one of my favorite podcasts! Especially dug the broader discussion about the genesis of and relation between the FPS/FPP genres.

Especially dug the broader discussion about the genesis of and relation between the FPS/FPP genres. Awesome, thanks! I know Snarboo said as much too, but talking about the similar games (and gradually varying viewpoints) was more fun than playing either of the topic games. I will say that Wade Hixton surprised me and had excellent production values for what's basically a "budget" title (and is a pretty fun game to boot).

Listening to the podcast now. The Genesis games that used the same engine were the Holyfield one and its sequel Greatest Heavyweights, which is pretty awesome. Said engine was also used on Riddick Bowe Boxing for the SNES (also released in Mexico as Chavez, based on the boxer), since it was also developed by Malibu Interactive. The one with Butterbean was Toughman Contest. It's not very good. EDIT: Looked up vids of Boxing Fever and Punch King. They look awful, I agree. Interestingly enough, Boxing Fever ended up getting a sequel of sorts named Black & Bruised for the PS2 and GameCube, but it seems to take more after Ready 2 Rumble than Punch-Out!! Although the perspective reminds me more of the Malibu Interactive boxing games.
