Holy shit, I just looked this up. The Japanese age of consent is 13? That explains A LOT. Yukito will probably jump in, but I think that's only in certain regions. I seem to remember reading for most of the country it's 16 or 17.

I think it also depends on the kind of sexual activity, e.g blow jobs from 13 year olds are ok, but no penetration until they are 16. The NostalgiaCritic actually noted that whole clusterfuck in his Sailor Moon revew some time ago, but I kinda forgot the exact ages.
Oh yeah, and not to single Japan out as that whacky pedo-country, as said the age of consent is technically a lot lower than you'd often exptect, even in countries you would not think so. Good old Europe for example: 13 in Spain, 14 in Germany, 15 in France. Only three countries here have it at 17/18 apparently. Of course, there's usually a lot of "but when... then..." stuff added to it.

Censorship is censorship, and those costumes are really tame compared to some of the content in Compile Heart games that was more understandably censored for the US (i.e. Neptunia mkII's infamous monster-on-loli licking scene and Mugen Souls' loli bathing minigames). Before the similar censorship of Fire Emblem Awakening, I was under the false impression that NOA's Puritanical streak ended in the SNES era. I'm triple not buying this now. 1. Nobody Cares. 2. Nobody Cares. 3. Nobody Cares. 4. Shut. 5. The. 6. Fuck. 7. Up. 8. Forever.

Even in the US, it's 14 in some places (for states that have a "4 Year Rule" when it comes to people 18 or over being with someone 17 or younger. Though in some it's 3 or less). As long as they're no more than 4 years apart. Even so, it's still fairly offputting to be displaying 14-15 year olds in revealing/fetishistic outfits.

I've never seen a 14, lowest is 16 here in the states. But, I wonder if the reason it isn't so low is due to if the girl gets knocked up, it allows the father to not have to got to jail. Which in turn allows the mother or the family of to push for child support if he bails. The reason it's 16 here is because I think we Yanks have very naive shitheads in positions of power.

No, it's because politicians are pervs and they like the idea of having sex with underage girls.

In some states, there's an allowance for a 3-4 year age difference, so even if the official AoC is 18, an 18 year old can do things with an 14 or 15 year old (or a 21 year old with a 17 year old) and still have it be legal. I'd assume that in the states where the official AoC is 16, there certainly wouldn't be that sort of allowance.

It actually seems like there are some of those allowances. I always thought in South Dakota (16) that the three years thing applied. So a 15 and an 18 were fair game. At least that's what I was told, by a person of questionable taste...

Hmmm...I see a lot of discussion about societal norms and such. Despite Orbus's invitation, I didn't really want to weigh in on Japan's situation with that because whatever I say is unlikely to do anything but cause a little discord. I'll just say that I think the problem stems from the fact that it's really hard to pinpoint objectively when somebody becomes an adult and that's probably why some disgusting acts prompt laws that are difficult to measure in the first place. My objection does not stem from the altered costumes (I don't much care either way, with the exception of Ringabel's apparent costume disappearance, which I think is a rather repulsive reflection of society if it's true). It's just that so many people (not necessarily here, but in the discussion at large) are implying the reason the costumes existed in the first place is to court the lolicon market. It just makes absolutely no sense to me. The game, like most of Square Enix's RPGs, is aimed at 15 to 24-year-old youth market and those who like old school RPGs, whatever their age. Lolicon content is not only often (not always) a PR death knell for mainstream acceptance, but distinctly unappealing to the target bases. Whether it's Capcom or Sony or Koei or Namco or Level 5, none of the big publishers is going to actively target a large degree of their product base to a small niche. I don't know what warps people's perceptions into thinking that lolicon is some huge market force in Japan and then extract pedophilia out of it. Maybe they are confusing the wider preference for cuteness with it, but that's like saying that because you like rock music, you're a devil worshipper. It just makes me sad because there is this reputation some Japanese creators have gained, when what Japan is doing as a whole, when you look at all the sectors of entertainment and compare them to other countries, is not so very different. Today I was reading a Vanity Fair article about why it's okay to like Teen Wolf (because I love it and last night's episode was phenomenal! Poor Stiles!). Really, it was probably one of those contributor blogs, so I shouldn't attack any perceived indulgences in Vanity Fair's editorial guidelines, but it was profoundly stupid. Throughout the article there is this implicit idea that it is not acceptable to enjoy material aimed at other age groups. That's quite possibly the least adult way of thinking I can imagine. First one looks better in the western version for sure, second one looks shit both ways. The real loss though is clearly Ringabels costume. Wonder why gamers don't mention that one as often, one might come to the conclusion, that cencorship is only a problem when aplied to slutty female costumes after all, hmm... Do I get brownie points for mentioning it as the most egregious part way back in page 2?

The problem is that schoolgirls seems perfectly good sex targets in anime, manga and videogames. I would dare to say that 95% of fanservice is from 16 years and lower. If something like Kodomo no Jikan was published out of japan, the medias would go crazy.
There is also the grating concept of xmas cake and how someone older than 25 is an old hag.
I just stopped watching anime when nearly every series became all about moe.

You're on the wrong board is all. I know of plenty of people who are shouting "CONSPIRACY!" on the internet over Benghazi and Hillary Clinton.

I grew up in and eventually moved back to the American Midwest. All those stereotypes you've heard of about small minded, homophobic, sexist, racist bigoted Americans? The ones who cling to their guns and bibles and still refer to evolution as a "theory"? They exist. Boy do they exist.

Have you accepted Karl Marx as your savior, and Mao Zedong as his prophet?
