Capcom's definition of "social" is pretty vague.
Kazunori Sugiura is towing the industry line, so they aren't doing anything different from other large publishers. Indeed, Demon's Souls has been recognized as a successfully incorporation of social features, so the traditional game isn't being completely replaced.

Well Capcom got yelled at for including DLC on their game discs at retail, so maybe now the strategy is to put it all in mandatory patches. You have to pay double for what you already have, either way!

What Capcom and other Japanese game developers need to do is stop letting there pride get in the way and change their way of thinking to prebably standing a chance in today's game market. Mega Man creator Keiji Inafumi (not sure if that's how you spell his name right) said something like that a while ago I believe.

Rigid adherence to outdated traditions is what got Nintendo to where they are today!

That's what I mean. I've heard from several Nintendo employees (both former and current) about just how out of touch their management is with the current state of the industry. It shouldn't have required three years of being in the red for the higher ups to realize that something wasn't right. They should have figured it out back when someone said, "Let's stick with cartridges for our next home console."

On the other hand, Nintendo (and I guess Atlus) is the only major Japanese publisher consistently putting out games I actually enjoy playing.

Yeah, it's not that they don't know how to make good games anymore. It's their hardware decisions.

To be fair to Nintendo they tried to be *hip* in the sixth generation and that back fired pretty heavily on them. Then they released the Wii which certainly was a gamble and luckily for management fluked out in a big way.

But it does seem like they took away the wrong message from that. I actually have a lot of sympathy for their "hardware isn't everything" argument, and lower specs do not especially bother me. But the market is what it is. Nintendo also seems totally unable or unwilling to effectively court third party developers for their traditional consoles (portable's another story).

I can't believe that MS would allow this. They can't possible be THAT out of touch with reality, can they? Yes. You may remember during the "Always On" fiasco, someone working for MS said that he didn't care about people who lived in areas that didn't have the kind of service that he gets, and that they should live somewhere that does, instead. I believe he was fired in an act of MS trying to cover its own ass, but still.

Yes, but this is January of 2014, not July of 2013. They really aren't doing anything to change the public's perception of their product.

Seeing as how I buy all of Nintendo's systems and games, I'm going to have to say you're full of shit on that one.
