www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-02-06-sega-announces-sonic-boom-for-3ds-and-wii-uLooks awful as a re-imagination (the gameplay looks ok for the time being but not as impressive as Sonic Team's works the latest years) but at least according to Sega it will be just a "new branch of the Sonic universe". Which probably means that it won't be a reboot for the whole francise. At any case it will be the first time where a Sonic game will be connected with a Sonic animated series (Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine doesn't count since it's just a re-skin of the first Puyo Puyo with characters from Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog). Sega tried to do something similar in the past by making a games based on Sonic the Hedgehog: The Animated Series for Mega Drive but it was cancelled (if I'm not mistaked because Yuji Naka didn't liked it). www.nintendolife.com/news/2011/06/feature_the_sonic_games_that_never_wereI'm curious to see the final result of the game (the animated series series looks incredibly stupid from the trailer to the point I couldn't stand watching it till the end even thought it's short) and how well it will sell the whole Sonic Boom branch. The sure thing is that certain fanboys will buy it with close eyes like they did with games like Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 which according to them "it's wasn't so bad".

Buffles! There you are! That's right, come to papa! Who's a cranky, Chaos Emerald-protecting echidna? That's right, you, Buffles! Yeah, Buffles, it's you. Now be a good redesign and piss off everybody! That's a good redesign! Go get 'em, tiger!

(Personally I like both the old and the new design the same)

Character designs aside I do like what else I see.

At first I thought the Skrillex music was coming from an ad or some pop-up running the background, because clearly it couldn't have come to this.
But no, it actually comes from the trailer. Yes, it does. This trailer seriously features a grossly-designed, keffieh-wearing Sonic acting cool over cliché'd Hollywoodian music and a licensed dubstep BGM.
...
And I saw the wild beast and the kings of the earth and their armies gathered together to wage war against the one seated on the horse and against his army. 20 And the wild beast was caught, and along with it the false prophet that performed in front of it the signs with which he misled those who received the mark of the wild beast and those who worship its image. While still alive, they both were hurled into the fiery lake that burns with sulfur.

Speaking as somebody who tolerates Sonic a lot more than a majority of people, I'm taking a wait and see approach on this. But I am mostly hopeful, I'll admit. A Sonic game designed by ex-Naughty Dog staff has the potential to be amazing. And the cartoon, while the designs are kind of... well. Divisive, I'll say. I don't mind Knuckles's new look so much, since it helps differentiate him from Sonic a little more. This generally looks like it's going to be some goofy fun, and I love the whole "Sonic is a sarcastic dickhole" thing they started doing since Colors. I can't wait to see the "Robotnik takes Sonic to court" episode, that sounds amazing.
And no fucking Dimps this time, thank you, Sega.

This must be posted [ vidya ] I would seriously like to see a 2D-animated Sonic game in the style of something like Rayman Legends. Seriously, Sega. You thought of THIS first?

The most exciting news in this announcement is clearly the fact that Dimps won't develop this new game. That means a new take on traditional Sonic action? Then I'm all for it. I am a Dimps supporter, but their track record has become awful. Both 3DS games failed to find a real dedicated audience, and although I would still recomend Sonic 4, Episode 2, that's about the only game in their recent catalogue that is worth it's price.
I also know that there will always be a market for a well-done, properly developed handheld Sonic. Sonic Advance 1 was truly great, and I love the Rush trilogy, especially Rush Adventure. Dimps seem to have had problems positioning Sonic on the 3DS since the beginning. But for what it's worth, I do hope Dimps give us a good, long enough 2,5D Sonic on the 3DS. A Sonic Rush level of quality would be enough, if - for once - they actually have the possibility to put enough time in their game. I like the Dimps approach on handhelds.
Poor Dimps. They only published one badly received game, Sonic Advance 2, and 5 other games (Advance/Rush trilogies) suffer from it.. along with their reputation. There is a big chunk of hypocrisy in that stance towards Dimps, particularly when compared to how nicely, gently, Nintendo's "New SMB" series has been (not-)criticised. (Not to say that the "NewSMB" franchise is bad at all. I have my favorite in this franchise like everybody else (Mine is the least-well received game in the franchise (!), and I love it dearly).
I'd hate to lose Dimps, and "ex-Naughty Dog staff" is nice, but certainly not enough to create confidence.
Oh well, let's wish we get OK games, and no disaster in the coming 2 years; that will do it for me.

My problem with the handheld Sonic games is that after Rush Adventure, they stopped being their own thing and just became watered down portable versions of the console stuff.

My problem with the handheld Sonic games is that after Rush Adventure, they stopped being their own thing and just became watered down portable versions of the console stuff. I perfectly understand that. The specter of the cheap port is always there with handhelds. But Colours is a bright example of Dimps appropriating the console game's new gameplay twists (The Wiisps powers in this case), then making them work in 2D, within their own Sonic flow and their own level-design philosophy. That's the work of a talented studio. It's with Generations that they really fell, hard. I have it, what is there is great, but paying full price for it - it's basically half a game, but with a complete price tag - inevitably soured me on handheld Sonics. If I was indifferent towards the franchise to begin with, then.. ouch. I guess I would despise Dimps - and Sonic.

I feel like I'm the only person that isn't violently offended by this. The redesigns are pretty good (just look at Robotnik for Christ's sake!), and far worse things have been done with this franchise as of late.
