I stumbled upon this. Not the greatest, but still pretty darn good. Unfortunately, the Youtube comments are quite unhelpful when it comes to its origins (though I have to admit, it would make pretty good hold music for the Nintendo phone lines). Any ideas?

Nintendo did. It was for an arranged special disc that accompanied the soundtrack to the game when it was released in the early 90s. It was really common in those days to have a band or a team that remixed bonus arranged music for a soundtrack into jazz versions. You'll find there's about 10 or so other tracks from the album in the same jazz style. I have it and I'm willing to share if you want me to convert it to MP3s. Looking at the CD, it looks like it the arrangement was done by Souichi Noriki, who runs a music studio in Kyoto. I imagine that Kondo knows him as a colleague and that's how he came to arrange the album. It's funny. I've seen the studio before when walking past it (it's on one of the busiest and most trafficked streets in Kyoto), but I've never noticed the connection. And yes, you could see Nintendo building occasionally from my train ride to school every morning, but it wasn't something I ever really paid attention to.

It's the first one. The one in the Mushroom Kingdom link with the track listing of all the Super Mario World music. And it isn't a doujin album, it was officially released by Nintendo. As for a rip, as soon as I searched for Soichi Noriki on Youtube, the entire thing came up in a playlist. I hope this links works better than the one I first gave for ALL OVER XANADU.That's the whole of the arranged music from CD, minus the original SFC/SNES tracks directly from the game, of course.

I have no idea why this was in Emulation, so I've moved it to Video Game Music.
