Good news is that it looks like this guy's the real deal, he's also apparently released repros in the past for protos he found such as a Chuck Yeager simulator. I found out about the NES Chuck Yeager somewhat recently; haven't seen how it exactly is, but I am aware of it now! Somewhat related: Anyone else was excited when that copy of the unreleased DS Gauntlet game got dumped? I know I was, especially since up until that point the only playable thing was an old demo from the Nintendo Channel or whatever. I actually had no idea about it myself...interesting!

Saw it on a thread on AssemblerGames, not sure if I should post it since it's got a download link for said ROM. It's not a hoax or anything, since I've got it on my flashcart and it works well.

One question I have about the prototype: Is it 100% complete?

One question I have about the prototype: Is it 100% complete? Gauntlet DS or Monster Party? In the former's case, yeah, seems like it from what I've played thus far. If it's the latter, no idea.

The latter. That was what I meant.

The latter. That was what I meant. Going off of what the owner said, it is complete and playable all the way through - this came up because he got bitched out by some forum goer for releasing a fixed/playable version of a rom for another proto game "because it compromises the integrity of the original product." Or something. Then that guy got bitched out by everyone for being a tool.

I'm considering doing a livecast maybe this weekend if anyone's interested; I need to see if my shitty internet connection will handle it first though. I'm definitely doing a longplay to show off the differences so I can practice Lightworks.
So far I'm not seeing a TON of differences, but the bosses are mostly different from the official release so far, and as of stage 2 there's at least one different regular enemy. Looking forward to seeing all of the changes!
Also, I am totally out of practice.

Well, I just finished playing through it. It's one of my favorites NES games, though I hadn't played it in a while, so I watched a playthrough online to refresh myself on the US version.
Obvious changes I noticed:
-No health boost when you beat a level -No question mark item after defeating a boss -Some minor color changes on some things, like the eyeball enemies during the final boss fight -Of course, the first boss looks less like a pitcher plant and more like a fly trap, with the Little Shop of Horrors stuff -Stage 3 doesn't have those little blocky objects that go up and down -The cat-in-a-box is a Gremlin that switches to its watered form -Stage 2 egg enemies shoot little Alien-esque critters instead of bubbles -Some enemies were changed in the penultimate level - the goalie-looking guy in the US version looks more like Jason in the JPN version and the ghost enemy in the US version of the penultimate level was changed to those Chinese hopping monsters (sorry, don't know the name offhand) -The invisible man boss in the US version is a mummy in the JPN version, complete with a background featuring the Statue of Liberty peeking out of a river, or something
I know I'm probably missing a bunch. I probably should have taken some notes as I played. I didn't pay too much attention to the dialogue, since the run I watched skipped it too fast, so that will require some further investigation. One thing I noticed that I prefer in the Japanese version is the very last bit of dialogue. In the US version, Mark tells his mom that he's leaving, and then Bert shows up and says that they should go again. In the Japanese version, Mark says he's leaving, and Bert says "OK, let's go." A minor thing, but I think I prefer it.
Edit: Remembered some more things:
-Serpentine Medusa boss in the US version looks like a regular, humanoid Medusa in the JPN version -For some reason, the "boss" with the dancing zombies has one more zombie in the JPN version for a total of three, and the US version has two, IIRC -The penultimate level in the US version has two bosses you have to beat for the key, and the JPN version only has one, the caterpillar enemy -The humanoid bat enemy in the US version of...level 4, I think? Or maybe 3? looks like Dracula in the JPN version -The boss with three pieces of tempura in the US version is now only one piece, the piece of shrimp, in the JPN version
Second Edit: Remembered one more:
-The boss of the maze level with the really creepy background is easier and simpler in the Japanese version. There's no dealing with fake copies of it, or anything, and it's totally ground bound.

Does Bert last longer? I started flashing halfway through the first boss and it lasted until I got to the next door.

-The boss with three pieces of tempura in the US version is now only one piece, the piece of shrimp, in the JPN version. That's odd, since all three appear on the title screen. And one superficial thing that's bothering me is that the bgm doesn't change for the second half of the first level. I always liked that.

That seemed to be a common gripe from all of us when we were doing the livecast. I'm wondering if anyone's going to hack the "official" game to have the prototype enemies; I really like the copyright infringement bosses, but the final, US version seemed a lot more polished overall (although TBH it's too easy for the most part). BTW, keep an eye out on the Youtube channel, I'm going to try to get the compilation for the livecast uploaded this week if possible so we aren't beaten to the punch too much - there's already a longplay but they don't have shit on us (and only have annotations for the really obvious stuff).
