This is actually pretty belated - the auction ended in February, but apparently someone found a Monster Party proto in a box of games in Japan, sold it on Ebay, and they're reportedly going to dump the rom. Photos and videos are on the first post, and unless it's an elaborate hoax it looks legit. www.nintendoage.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=35&threadid=121367According to later posts, the bosses and levels are all different, and tons of copyright infringement stuff (I'm guessing along the lines of the Planet of the Apes boss shown in the past)...can't wait to see it. Now THIS is a game I would have gone to great lengths to crowdfund and/or buy from Japan.

The dumping of this rom cannot come soon enough. You'll never know. It might get lost should Japan have another natural disaster. Not that the other prototype was lost the last time Japan had one, just saying.

Doesn't look like he's going to charge to dump it despite spending $3500 on it, what a guy (well, we'll see).

I sincerely hope this gets dumped if only to spite that jackass who got the first known copy and was all "haha I'll taunt the public with like one screenshot of the game and keep the rest to myself forever neener neener neener."
Fuck that guy.

And Rob may even do an update to his article on this game by the time the rom gets dumped.

The bosses all appear to have been based on licensed products, like how the first boss is based on Little Shop of Horrors.

Yeah, the Audrey boss is different, and there have been photos and videos (some from the owner of the other known proto) that showed other bosses that were different, like the spider boss was originally like the "head spider" from John Carpenter's The Thing, and a boss that was a Planet of the Apes ape on horseback.

Never mind the fact that I have a ton of articles to write and one that needs a drastic overhaul, you'd better believe I'll be updating the MP article once I've played through the proto. And yes, as Monster Party's self-proclaimed #1 fan, I've been on top of this since day one, even going as far as to message the seller on eBay while the auction was ongoing to inquire more about it (nice guy, BTW). If I'd had the cash, I'd have bid on it myself. I've already voiced my desire to buy a repro to the owners. More bulletins as events warrant!

From NA: "There are countless bosses that were replaced in NA and not in Japan. A lot of the sprites for these characters were left in, but they don't make any sense due to the lack of context. In the Famicom release, everything meshes together perfectly. There are also a ton of regular baddies that underwent serious sprite changes due to copy write issues."
I'm so excited about this...solving one of the greatest mysteries of my youth...

This game may have gotten a Japanese release if it hadn't been for the Otaku Murderer, Tsutomu Miyazaki, assuming that was the main reason.

I really hope that the owner releases this. I cannot wait to play through this. I glad that there a community for this game. I have friends who had never even heard of Monster Party until more recent years.

Good news is that it looks like this guy's the real deal, he's also apparently released repros in the past for protos he found such as a Chuck Yeager simulator.

I found out about the NES Chuck Yeager somewhat recently; haven't seen how it exactly is, but I am aware of it now! Somewhat related: Anyone else was excited when that copy of the unreleased DS Gauntlet game got dumped? I know I was, especially since up until that point the only playable thing was an old demo from the Nintendo Channel or whatever.
