So I was thinking of getting a used X-Box so that I could play emulated games on it. Thing is, it needs to be modded... and... ummm... what all goes into modding an X-Box? And does anyone know a seller that has used, modded X-Boxes?
And on a similar note, what do you have to do to a Gamecube to play imports on it?

Modded Xboxs are like gold, as far as value. However, they are kinda "grey market", because it's very easy to include pirated games on it.
There are two ways to mod an Xbox - either the usual hardware route (requires soldering, a pain in the ass, so I've been told), and soft modding, which requires a memory card, an Action Replay, a hacked save game and one of three games that use the exploit (Splinter Cell, Mech Assault and Agent Under Fire, all original releases, not Platinum Hits.) In theory you should just be able to download the save, load up the game, and it'll install the mod for you. I tried about a year ago and the package didn't work at all. And nobody knew why. The problem is, since these activities are (a) all kinds of shifty and (b) all homebrew, there's very little real support out there, and very few places to turn if something goes wrong. Theoretically, if something screws up, you'll end up erasing the system's OS and bricking your Xbox.

I have a nicely modded xbox- it was solder modded by some local fellah, he also stuck in a 160gig HD into it that I had bought for the occasion. Well, I would say it was a worthy investment: Emulated NES, SNES, SMS, PC Engine, Megadrive/Genesis stuff on the HD. Also (after many, many painstaking hours) I managed to get stuff like Samurai Showdown 5 Special working on it- full fatalities etc, joy! And yeah...maybe I ripped a big bunch of games onto the HD too. The custom media centre is also pretty fantastic when you get it configured right.
