Hey everyone...
Haven't noticed any threads on FFXII, so I thought I'd start one.
Has anyone been playing this? I bought it almost specifically because so many people seem to be complaining that Square changed too much of the "Final Fantasy formula." I felt that I should reward them for trying something new.
So anyway, I've only played about an hour and am really liking it. Almost immediately you have a lot more freedom than you usually would in a Final Fantasy game to wander around and explore. It's not quite Romancing Saga, but it's also very different from what I expect in a FF game.
The US version adds widescreen support (yay!) but the sound quality for the dialog is awful... it sounds compressed.
I am liking the story so far... nothing melodramatic so far. I've read there's no real romance in the game, which is fine by me. Video games tend to handle that stuff awkwardly anyway.
The battle system is actually pretty relaxing. I like that I don't have to pound on the X button to keep attacking. It's nice to "set it and forget it" and just observe, stepping in time to time to change tactics.
Anyway, if you are like me and were getting sick of the FF series (and console RPGs in general), you may find that Square changed up FFXII enough to make it interesting to you.

Yeah I got FFXII and I think it's fantastic. The break from the FF formula is fantastic and it's really well done. I think when a game series or genre gets to the point where it gets defined by a formula it's time for change in order to take it to the next level.

The furries are already drawing lousy porno pics of that rabbit prostitute thingy.
I haven't played a FF since FFVIII, should I give it a chance like I probably should to Kingdom Hearts (I realy wana solve that mystery ;D)?

Just what the hell kind of accent does Fran have anyway?
Only sunk about 6 hours in so far but it's quite excellent. The writing is quality and so is the voice acting. It's also introduced the word "hamshanks" into my everyday vocabulary.

It's nice to "set it and forget it" and just observe, stepping in time to time to change tactics. I think you've been watching too many Ron Popeil infomercials! Anyway, I love this game; it's probably my favorite game so far this year. It has lots of depth with its gambit system, but isn't nearly as vague as Vagrant Story (which is still a favorite of mine) so is easier to get into. I also love how much more exploration there is than previous FFs due to huge maps and a good feeling of interconnectedness, though you really have to watch out in some places. That being said, it does take a while to get into things. You don't get useful gambits until later on, and skills are hard to develop in the beginning. And camera's a problem during battles, because it's so close up to either the party leader or the enemy that it's hard to see your mates at times. Voice acting is overall excellent, but I don't like the recording of Vaan's character, as it sounds hollow, like it was done in the middle of a warehouse. Other than that and a couple of goofy accents (Al-Cid or whatever his name is especially), a great job. Balthier and Ashe are my personal favorites.

Everyone I talk to about the game loves it. I really want it, especially since I just beat FFVII for the first time (really....I've had the game ever since VIII came out and I never beat it...shame on me). Unfortunately I have no money to buy it with since the Wii is coming out in two weeks. Hopefully I'll get it for Christmas...

I had FF12 pre-ordered and picked it up last weekend. I've put about four hours into it so far, and I really like it. The battle system is a refreshing change, and there are plenty of things to do that don't involve advancing the story (like the Marks). I wish there was a way to invert the camera controls, though (because it's confusing to have it pan to the left when I'm pushing right).

I like to play third person 3d games with the left stick controlling forward movement, and the right stick controlling turning left/right and moving the camera up and down. This way I never have to deal with awful cameras. My only other complaint is that the graphics are sort of underwhelming. The character models look pretty good, but the backgrounds are really terrible so far. Maybe they get better...

Dangit... I sorta lost touch with the FF series after FFX-2 was different in a way that I didn't rather favor, and FFXI was a freaking MMORPG... who's in favor of skipping those two games to get FFXII?

Okay, I can certainly pass over X-2, but let me ask this: Without online connection, does FFXI have merit on its own? And allow me to further ask: How does FFXI stack up to other MMORPGs?

It's impossible to play FFXI offline.
I tried the beta on the 360 awhile back. I wandered around the first town for half an hour and gave up. Unless you've got friends actively trying to get you into the game, don't even bother.

Meh, its okay. I'm not particularly fond of the fact that it plays like an MMO, but that seems to be all the "rage" with the kids these days.
