Personall I've always wanted to play the first Fire Emblem, but haven't gotten a chance cuz it wasn't in English (actually, I attempted to wing it in Japanese anyway...)

Fire Emblems a horrible game to grind in, I love the game to pieces though, losing a character because of a 2% critical chance right after you spent the last 30 minutes grinding with them is nothing short of frustrating..thankfully they let you restart the level or if you're emulating and you feel so inclined, save states.

I do not really mind leveling up in Mario & Luigi, because it's battle system was excellent. Same goes for Tales of... and Star Ocean and games like that. Strategy rpgs do not bother me at all, because I like those kinds of rpgs best.
If you are trying to get into Fire Emblem, I have played 1-8 and would say that they are all MASTERPIECES. If there is a best, however, I would say it was Fire Emblem: Seisen no Keifu for SFC (FE4). Twelve randomly selected intros, ability to affect character relations which affects game-play, more plot variations and game-play variations possible than you will likely ever see, possibly more replayability than any other rpg, and my favorite base game-play in any rpg series or rpg game ever. AMAZING game and series.

My policy on grinding is not to do it, and just fight everything that comes my way. Therefore I hate that boss fight in FF5 just before you get the dragon thing. You mean Shinryu? Or Omega? I slapped Shinryu's ass, but Omega I couldn't beat, ever. That's one tough mother******. I'll try again on FF V for GBA.

Oh dude, get the GBA versions.... if you like collecting rare items and relics. It's Nintendo's version of FF Tactics, lite, simpler and cute graphics. Kinda like Advance Wars. I could never get into FF Tactics, and I tried the PSO and GBA versions.

Speaking of level grinding, a friend of mine killed Chupon in the colloseum in Final Fantasy VI. Now that's hard.
I killed Lavos in Chrono Trigger by accident half way thru the game the first time you see it, when it's supposed to capture you. Had a %80 counter belt equipped by accident and just kept healing.

I meant Magisa, the blond bounty hunter with that big hulking thing with gems all over. Seriously, that boss battle is WAY imbalanced from the rest of the game!

I just remembered a rpg with no level grinding at all. Monstania (SFC). And it only takes four hours.

Romancing Saga for the PS2 is one RPG that does not require level grinding. In fact, it punishes you for it. The more monsters you fight the more an invisible counter increases... the higher this counter is, the faster "time" goes by in the games universe. So if you sit there and level grind you'll miss all of the sidequests and go right to the end of the story and it will make no sense. Level grinding really doesn't do you in any good in that game anyway. You get much better results in planning ahead and carefully choosing how to develop your characters with what you get through just playing the game. The stat boosts you get from fighting are pretty much useless compared to the training you do through collecting gems... and the only way to get a ton of gems is to solve sidequests, which you will miss if you run around power leveling. It's a cool system if you sit down and play with it, but you have to be willing to devote some time to it (or at least read one of the in-depth FAQs at gamefaqs). At first it seems totally random and doesn't make sense... but that's because it isn't meant to be played like Dragon Quest or a traditional Final Fantasy is meant to be played.
