I like rpgs, don't get me wrong. They are all I have been playing recently. However I am NOT fond of level grinding. I will not avoid a game because of it, but I do not like it. Are there any rpgs, other than strategy rpgs, where all necessary leveling up takes place during the natural course of playing the game? Meaning no level grinding at all? I exclude strategy rpgs, which are my favorite rpgs, because they have levels and as a result do not have level grinding because you can not go back where you have been.

Most console RPGs I played don't require leveling up at all. It's just lame people who always want the easy way and do leveling. If they lost to some boss more than one time they thinking "oh it's not that I'm doing something wrong or that I need to change something, It's the game fault, I HAVE to do leveling".
I can give many examples: Suikoden series, Valkyrie Profile, Lunar SSSC, SMT3 (even on hard), Riviera: The Promised Land, Xenogears, some "Tales of " games, and there are also the easy games like Chrono series, FF6, FF9, Lufia 2 and more. I finish all of them without leveling.

I have played quite a few RPGs where I could move along at a steady pace without halting for much enemy-slaying. These include some of my favorites, like Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, Earthbound, and Super Mario RPG. Perhaps I'd go out of my way to gain a couple levels every here and there for a real pisser of a boss (damn you, Magus), but they're well-paced for the most part. IMO, a good RPG doesn't require you to gain several levels in order to clear a great obstacle. ... though, I don't know much, considering that RPG's usually aren't up my alley.

I usually don't do it at all. Now, if it's a good game, I like doing all the side-quests, exploring the map, and rare item collecting. Which in turn results in my characters having higher levels. Does that count as level grinding??? Final Fantasy VI, Xenogears, Chrono Trigger, Valkyrie Profile, Grandia, Persona 2: Innocent Sin and Vagrant Story are examples. If the game is not that good to inspire me to get all its goodies then I just head straight to the end. Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy X are examples.
OR you can just play Super Mario RPG, where the programmers make sure you don't have that liberty! lol

OH and I LOVE Fire Emblem. I grinded the hell out of that game in one of the first colloseums, leveling each of my characters up almost to the max (max is level 20). Now if you do all the side-quests, the game is so hard even if you level up, I haven't finished it yet!!

if I recall, I think Chrono Trigger (near the end of the game), Gasper would list off hints to where all the side-quests are and tell you something along the lines of "the more of these you complete, the easier it will be to fight Lavos." I remember thinking to myself, "No-shit sherlock, completing sidquests and leveling up will of course help you fight the end boss". FFXII (so far) has had the most annoying necessity for grinding I've seen. I quickly find myself grinding for items to sell, which is a pain b/c you can only get those in certain areas, and most of the time you get magicite which sells for 80 gil a pop (bleh). Does anyone have any ideas on how to get more shit to sell?

Both Mario & Luigi games don't require you to level. I like these games because they rely a lot on quick reflexes and skill rather than leveling. Plus you can avoid enemies on the field because they are all visible as opposed to random battles. Of course, I didn't have to level partially because I fought every enemy I came in contact with because the battle system in these games is a lot of fun. I also suggest the other Mario RPG games, Skies of Arcadia, Riviera, and the Valkyrie Profile titles.

My policy on grinding is not to do it, and just fight everything that comes my way. Therefore I hate that boss fight in FF5 just before you get the dragon thing.

Level grinding is usually frustrating and pointless but not always. The Diablo series know how to reward you for it and the Shin Megami Tensei series make it mandatory, but fun.

I'd prefer not to grind if the choice is there, grinding is my number one reason why I don't play MMOs though.

I'd prefer not to grind if the choice is there, grinding is my number one reason why I don't play MMOs though. I am reminded of South Park... my idea of a game is not killing weak-ass enemies for seven weeks nonstop and crapping in a bowl instead of pausing to use the toilet. ;D As long as the battle system doesn't grow monotonous over a million battles, then I wouldn't mind fighting for some EXP. Mario and Luigi mentioned above is a good example of this. (Partly OT, but I haven't played a single Fire Emblem game... all I know are Marth and Roy from Super Smash Bros. Melee. Heh... can anyone recommend some of the best from the series?)

This whole thing reminds me of the Tales of series, and its really fun battle system.

I'll grind if the battle system allows for fast battles. FF12, Phantasy Star 4, and Ys Eternal are really easy to grind on. Ys Eternal in particular is fun to grind on because all you have to do is just run around mindlessly, crashing Adol into stuff. No need to hammer an attack button or select spells to take advantage of monster weaknesses.

There's a Fire Emblen article underway, actually, it's a bit over half done. For starters, either grab the first GBA game (FE7), or the Gamecube game (FE9). Both are relatively newbie friendly and help ease you into how the game works. They both have pretty gentle learning curves too. As far the most amibitious (and to a lot of fans, the "best") is Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy Way (FE4) for the Super Famicom.
