We've hit our Patreon funding goal so the Your Weekly Kusoge column can actually be weekly now. However, there's only so many bad games that the staff can stomach, so we'll be looking to you, the public, for submissions. Here are the requiremets.
- Kusoge articles are humor pieces, so they should be written with that in mind. You don't need to describe the whole game like in a standard HG101 article, just give some background and home in on what really makes the game such a disaster. - That being said, this isn't the Angry Video Game Nerd. Avoid scatological humor. Turn up the snark instead. - For picking games, we want games that are comically awful. There are tons of games with bad graphics or poor collision detection, but there needs to be something uniquely terrible about the subject you've chosen. - That said, you can still talk about the high points of the kusoge. It's very possible to enjoy a bad game! Just elaborate on the whys and hows. - Popular "bad" games (Sonic 2006, Takeshi no Chousenjou, Rise of the Robots) are fine, but we have a preference towards more obscure stuff. Z-grade DOS shareware, inscrutable European microcomputer titles, low quality Famicom titles, bootleg Asian games, obtuse Game Boy games, licensed characters in places where they don't clearly belong, games that were incredibly ambitious but completely failed due to developer ineptitude, things like that. - Try to avoid games that are clearly aimed towards children, especially cartoon tie-ins. There are some exceptions, but in general the expectations for licensed games, especially portable shovelware, is already very low, so only consider these if they're truly, hilariously wretched. - Pieces should be between 400 and 600 words. You can go over 600 but only if it's really necessary - we prefer pieces that are short and to the point. - Payment is $30 per article.
We've had a broad definition of kusoge over the years, so I'll be going through the current archive and moving some of them to a seperate section. In the past we've featured games that were good but intentionally stupid (House of the Dead), or just weird in a dumb way (Nobi Nobi Boy), and games that were not quite BAD enough, but I've found those created more confusion than anything.

Quick question - I know this is a no-no for regular articles, but are lapses into first-person ok on these?

Stay away from first person too, third person sounds more authoritative especially when you're denouncing something.

I have an article about a bootleg Famicom slot machine simulator called Dianshi Mali (aka Mario Lottery) already written in French with all the information and details needed, I could easily write about it for the kusoge section if you're interested.

Is this open to people who already have several YWK pieces under their belt ?
Also not sure about the money getting involved. Ridiculing horrible games has always been a favourite past time of mine.

Absolutely. Incidentally I was doing some researches on the dredges of Lemon64 and Lemon Amiga and I think I found some of your comments from some of these really bad ones (assuming there's only one Apachacha on the internet) so I think you'd be perfectly qualified.

Are especially awful ports cool as well? The Gameboy version of Double Dragon 3 and the DOS version of Street Fighter 2 come to mind.

Yeah, bad ports of good games are fine, but I don't want to make a habit of it. A lot of computer ports of arcade games could potentially fall into this territory so I'd prefer only to keep it to ones that are really, really bad. Like, the IBM PC version of Street Fighter II, which looks good on the outside, but man...

I'm trying to get a feel for what to do with it; I find it hard to be snarky in third-person . What's your opinion on full articles on kusoge? I'm working on one right now, but there's a lot to say about what's wrong or weird about it and I'm already well over the word limit for a YWK article.

I'm happy to hear Nobi Nobi Boy is being moved out of the Kusoge section. I always thought it's inclusion was unsuited for the feature, so it's nice to see that.

Yeah that's me ! And this site is kinda the reason why I even use that name anyway : P That is very good to hear. Well, I do believe it's time for me to re enter the horrifying world of Hana "of COURSE we won' tell you where you need to go" no Kaidou. If I don't return in two days, tell my family I feel very indiferent towards them !

If I ever finish my master's thesis, I'll try to get a write-up of / against that game done.

Noby Noby Boy is really getting promoted out of the kusoge category? That's a shame, it really sounds like it fits the bill. In fact, I honestly prefer the more recent entries. Unless they're somehow really notable, I don't see the point of harping on about 20-25 year old DOS, microcomputer and Japan-only famicom games. But that's the trick: more recent games are harder to put into the crap category, because most developers nowadays try to give their game an "indie" or "auteur" aura to deflect at least some of the criticism. Japanese games seem to do the same by going super-ultra anime, but that didn't save some of them for getting a place in the category. I've been thinking of writing one, but I can't think of something both notable and terrible enough. What was that Kickstarter game that ended suddenly after a few hours?

There was a Kickstarter for a proposed Lufia by someone who didn't have the license, didn't have any skills of note, and whose rewards were hilariously out of touch. Otherwise, not sure!
More recent games I'd be willing to cover, but most of this old stuff can be had for free, I feel weird paying for games that I know I'm going to hate. Like, I know Vampire Rain is terrible, but that $5 can be used to buy like two and a half more cups of coffee.
I also feel back for picking on a recent game that was clearly only made by like one person. At that point it's just mean, unless it's something just really bizarre and not just technically inept.
