Check out their Tumblr: driftstage.tumblr.com/Some nice 'SEGA Blue Skies' in there if you scroll down a bit. Also, some of the gifs on the bottom of that page suggest a BIG Outrun2 influence... Also, Myrone (the musician) has an EP out for free download. I've been listening to it non-stop for a few weeks: myrone.bandcamp.com/releasesI'm very, very pumped for this. As was mentioned before, between this and 90's Arcade Racer, retro arcade racing appetites are set to be completely catered for real soon! I'm loving the aesthetic in Drift Stage - I too am a fan of the ultra-pixel textures. So chunky, and so nice!!!

You know, besides Blood Dragon and Doubl;e Dragon: Neon...I can't really think of any other games recently that have been all about "THE EIGHTIES!!!!!!" in that sense. Not nearly enough to call other games that try it "Hipster", IMHO. Hotline Miami also fits the bill. Spin it all you want, but the neon-faux-eighties-cheese aesthetic is big with hipsters right now.

At least, compared to junk like DLC Quest, Drift Stage actually looks good.

So your argument against the aesthetic is, other people like it therefore it's bad that someone is making it. A total of THREE games out of oh, what, three thousand games these last few years and it's suddenly a hipster trend?

Complaining about things being too hipster sounds like a pretty hipster thing to say.

Sorry, there's still a long ways to go before I begin sprouting an ironic waxed mustache, wearing suspenders and neon plaid shirts, drinking Pabst Blue Ribbon or craft beers with ridiculous names, riding fixed-gear bicycles, and moving to Williamsburg or Portland.

So which one of those things, is in Drift Stage? I wouldn't even be engaging this dialogue but I'm so happy games like Drift Stage are being made because it's such an entirely untapped field that I'm kind of amazed someone could hate that it exists.

Couldn't agree more. And better yet, heavy nostalgia tends to drive these things, so the passion is clearly there.

Could these track designs be any more repetitive or boring? I'll just fire up Coast 2 Coast if this style of racing game is what I want.

The devs even said that they got way more attention than they even expected to get at this early stage of development. We get it, you don't like it... I, however, am as pumped as hell.

You were, for the better part of this thread, effectively saying you don't take interest in the game because you're concerned with the personality of others that may like it. Why? Like you said, you're not going to transform into a miserable caricature as soon as you do something fitting your idea of "hipster". "Hipster" is such a meaningless buzzword anyway. What's a hipster, exactly? Someone who dresses well and enjoys obscure artwork? What's it about this aesthetic that's so deserving of the label? To me, this one of the most shallow concerns you can have for a game.
As for the stages being repetitive and boring, I agree. Hopefully, in time, the stage design will become more engaging (via the game being changed, not Stockholm syndrome).

Public Alpha is up for Download! supersystems.itch.io/driftstagealphaFirst impressions are great. It reminds me a LOT of Touge King the Spirits on the Saturn -but a lot more polished and tighter in the handling- and of course, OutRun 2. There's only one track, but yeah, the game feels great! It took all of a lap to get into the groove of Drift Stage - can't wait to see where it goes from here
