Getting stuff in order for the Konami Shooters book, and I'm revisiting Solar Assault. It works better on MAME than it did when I first wrote the Gradius article, but it always crashes in the middle of the third stage. This Youtube video plays the whole game and mentions a hack to get past it, but doesn't mention this hack at all and I can't find any information about it. Anyone have any experience getting this working?

So, there was kind of an obvious edit there in that video.
The score was back to 0 when stage 2 started.
Wonder if there were different MAME versions used over time or something.

There are cheat codes for M.A.M.E., but the only one I know that makes them, doesn't have a stage select for this one.

Are you using the latest MAME version? I checked the latest mameinfo.dat and it doesn't mention anything about that error. You could report that issue on the mametesters.org site, along with a save state (if supported). Also, did you try using an earlier version of MAME? Maybe it could work fine there. *edit* Ok, tried it on mame .150 and it crashed too. Let me report it.

I went back to .146 (one of the first revisions that really got the game in working order) and it makes it SLIGHTLY farther in the third stage...but still crashes.

Yeah, it has probably been there since the game was made playable. The reason why I was giving suggestions was because I "remembered" playing and beating the game. But then I realized I was thinking about Gradius 4 Anyway, I reported the bug, hopefully it doesn't take 3 years to fix.

It's up to 0.154 now. I go by this one mame32fx.altervista.org/home.htm (built in autofire, and the ability to turn off crosshairs if you're using an actual light gun, are a couple of it's advantages), but I don't know if it will work, since it's based on the same code and all.

It's still crashing.

The video description mentions the use of a hack to get past the fifth stage, so maybe our problem is completely different OR the hack nullifies both crashes, I don't know.
BTW: I really liked your YouTube avatar, Kurt! Richter is one of my favorite game protagonists of all time.

This video shows Solar Assault's fifth stage, but the description only mentions a solution to start the game (hold down F2, &c). The score also starts at zero. The uploader seems to be active so you could ask him directly.
