Joestar mentioned that he'd bought this a while back, and that while it contained nearly every soundtrack in the series, it wasn't exactly complete. Castlevania: The Adventure - Rebirth was one of the most notable absences, but there were also a few other gaps. What I'd like to do here is attempt to catalog what's missing, and then try to integrate it into what's already there. With the magic of MP3 players, we no longer have to worry about an album remaining in its factory release state in perpetuity. It would be great to finish the work Konami started here and have a truly complete collection of all of the music from all of the (to date) released Castlevania games, and perhaps even update it as necessary in the future. So, anyone have any ideas on what should be added to the collection?

I would really like it if this collection contained a track-by-track version of Castlevania 3's soundtrack; as it stands, it's the "official" release that has two or more songs mashed into the same track with unfitting reverb and sound effects. Same with Bloodlines: reverb over everything. I don't mind that they only include the FDS version of Simon's Quest; I kinda preferred that one anyway...but Rondo of Blood's soundtrack disc is pretty much just what is included on the game CD, so it's missing the couple of unique tracks that the SNES version had, as well as all of the PSG-based tracks like Poison Mind and the boss warning song.
I really must give them props, though, for even bothering to include the "non-canon" Castlevanias in the collection, especially 64 and Circle of the Moon. I could have sworn Konami had completely disowned them.

Doesn't this exclude Legacy of Darkness, though? This is exactly the kind of stuff I'm talking about. If we could make a track-by-track listing of everything that's absent, that would be perfect. Certainly a little more worthy tribute to the series than the current state of the release.

Check the Castlevania book! I wrote a summary of what's missing, though given space it's not entirely complete.
Offhand - it uses the Akumajou Dracula Best Vol 1 music for all three of the NES games so it's all of those medleys with the sound effects and stuff. The soundtracks to Lament of Innocence and Curse of Darkness have stuff cut out to fit on a single disc. It's missing Rebirth since that was released as a separate album on the same day. It's also missing the OST version of Portrait of Ruin, using the "original" versions (pre DS conversion) instead. It has Castlevania Legends, but none of the extra tracks of Legacy of Darkness, nor any of the SNES Dracula X.
The Gradius/Konami Shooter albums are SO much more comprehensive than this album. Kinda a bummer for the price tag.

Castlevania Chronicles went a bit overboard by including four complete versions of the same songs. I think it would have been enough to just go with the X68000 originals and the remixes for PS1. Not exactly "complete" per se, but one can only handle listening to the same tracks so many times.
It would be nice if the missing content could be added as "dash" discs, as well. So you'd have Disc 1, Disc 2, then Disc 2', Disc 3, Disc 3', etc. Don't think that would work very well with iTunes, though.

I found out after the fact that there's a LOT of omissions; I guess I should have read up, because it's nowhere near as complete as I thought it was gonna be. Don't get me wrong, it's pretty good, but still lacking. The early games are crammed on two disks, and there's a lot of really awesome tracks left out - like Weasel mentioned, Akumajou Densetsu/CVIII has like two songs on there, which is complete bullshit. Also I need to check but I think some of the tracks sound "off" compared to other versions on dedicated soundtracks - the songs in Portrait of Ruin, for example. Also I agree; the ReBirth soundtrack was great, and it was a crime that it wasn't included. *EDIT: just saw Kurt's post. Anyway I'd be up for ripping it or whatever, but I don't want to steal money from poor, starving Konami on a CD collection that wasn't released in this country (translation: PM me).

The stuff from the first three games do sound very similar to Akumajou Dracula Best vol. 1, but having listened to that album a billion times over the years, I did notice that the BOX version is missing a few things. It seems like a few of those in-between foley sounds are missing. Some of them are still there, but the cuts feel arbitrary. Not that they were ever really necessary in the first place, but it definitely seems odd for what amounts to a straight rip from a CD. I don't think they did the "handshake" thing this time around, either. Dracula Best also had the NES version of Simon's Quest's music, which I feel deserves inclusion for the simple contrast between it and the FDS version (NES one sounds better to me, personally).
Either way, they definitely gave the short end of the stick to Densetsu. The majority of the songs are packed together into "medleys" instead of getting their own dedicated track. It seems like BOX also gives way shorter loops than Best, or even most other OST releases. This feels especially noticeable on some of the Game Boy songs.
-edit-
No worries, joestar. Not exactly looking for anyone to pass the actual BOX around. Just trying to get a list together of exactly what songs, track by track, are missing from the official release.

Yeah that box collection looked like a real split. I ended up not buying it in the end, but there was a nice bundle that had that, the two Dracula X Radio Chronicle albums, and Contra + Castlevania Rebirth on Play Asia. I already own most of the albums that are on there, and many of the multi-disc albums are missing content on the BOX.
While Square-Enix is remastering their old Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger albums, and you've got Chris Huelsbeck having a professional tech remaster the Amiga Turrican soundtracks, Konami just reprints what's on their old albums and takes out some stuff to get it all to fit.
The iTunes releases don't seem to be that much better. Again, missing tracks (and not just licensed stuff like "I am the Wind").
