As the joke I use to tell, I think Chrono Trigger is the best final fantasy game made closely followed by grandia 2 and bravely default.
Jokes aside, Okami is the best legend of zelda game ever, seriously, the only thing I cant defend from this game is the wii version.

The Wii version is a disgrace and I am forever annoyed that it's the version I know so many people have played. I'd vote that the best FF ever made that isn't FF would be Suikoden Tierkreis. It took some pages from more old school FF than the Suikoden series at points, and it paid off by taking great elements from both franchises.

Cyborg Justice for the Genesis. The controls are obtuse and most of your arm/body options are pretty much functionally useless, but I loved it when I was eight and so cherish its memory. If they'd put more effort into it, it'd have actually been like the beat-'em-up predecessor of Armored Core.

I never played Chrono Trigger. But honestly I never played a lot of Japanese games until FF X-2 which was strangely enough the first FF game I ever played and my favorite to date. I did get around to playing X but didn't like it as much.

I will always defend:
Super Mario Bros. 2 Japan Snake's Revenge Kid Kool.
Especially Kid Kool. Too many people hate it, because of its challenge. I think when Vic Tokai made this game, they wanted to go for a more realistic effort; you run fast, and jump very high, which I thought was admirable of the company. There was a reason the original Japanese title was Jump Heaven, Speed Hell.

Castlevania 64 is an ambitious example of how a 3D Classicvania game should be: challenging platforming mixed with somewhat challenging combat, good (albeit more ambient than usual) soundtrack, epic boss fights, and varied yet intriguing areas. It's just a shame that the controls and camera were so poorly done.
Also, Super Mario Bros 2. Just because it started as Doki Doki Panic in Japan doesn't mean that it isn't a great game in its own right. The enemy design is my favorite in the series, and the end credits song is one of the best songs ever. I used to be able to play it on the piano.

Back then I was a little, wtf?

I think with the N64 and 3D platformers, the camera was something that was never quite gotten 'right' on any of the games in the genre. There's so many titles that could have been outright great, had the camera controls been better. But, we're talking about the first console to really go full bore into the 3d platformer realm, so you have alot of experimentation, and just ignorance of the hardware capabilities. And also, limitations of the hardware perhaps. That's why I think the N64 really excels when you don't have to fiddle with the camera, with Racing games, and FPS.

I will always defend Chrono Cross. It's the pinnacle of RPG gaming; I haven't been able to play any 'traditional' RPG made after CC came out because they all feel like a major leap backwards.
It's actually super easy to defend, too, simply because it was made so well. The most common complaint is that there are too many characters. If you ask me, that's a compliment. B-)

The obvious ones, for me, are Final fantasy 7 and kingdom hearts 1. In fact, I'm replaying FF7 as we speak!

B-) It has a batshit story, the too many characters thing is a negative because so many of them are useless fluff. It also is a major step back in how battles seamlessly transitioned in CT, and in CC require a seperate screen. The Double and triple techs feel much more sparse as well. The only real compliments I have for CC are that it sounds and looks great.

Breakdown A First person Beatem up for Xbox made by namco. This would've been awesome game indeed. I'm surprised Namco didn't remake this for the newer Xbox to make it compatible with Kinect and Controller. Speaking of Kinect games..... IF you could only play it with the controller then it might have been decent

The only real compliments I have for CC are that it sounds and looks great. This sums up how I feel about the game, as well. Chrono Trigger had a small cast that provided a sense of camaraderie, while allowing you to explore each person's backstory. Chrono Cross just throws a bunch of random anime tropes at the wall, assigns them an arbitrary elemental color, and hopes some of it will stick. I would really, really love to know what the development process for that game was like. It's a quintessential example of how Japanese games often end up directionless. Well, that and FFXIII. CC isn't THAT bad, by comparison.
