Mario's Picross and the Wario Ware / Made In Wario series, mostly. Especially since they're on handhelds, which makes it easy to grab them for a quick go between other things.

My current favourite time-wasting game is Puzzle&Dragons for Android (also available for iOS). My only complains are: 1) That althought they made plans for Puzzle&Dragons Z localization (a Puzzle&Dragon game for 3DS which I could play any fucking time I want offline instead of waiting for the F2P smartphone game to let me play again) we still haven't seen anything yet. 2) The Android version is not available for Europe, so everytime they release an update (which is neccessary to play the game) I must use apk downloader (a kind of program which lets you download free games which are region-locked).

In all honesty, the Pokemon Pinball games are my choice.

Pokemon Pinball games rule! One of the best Pokemon spin-offs and one of my favourite pinball video games. I would love to see a new one but I doubt it will ever happen.

With Nintendo recently releasing an eShop exclusive sequel to Pokémon Trozei (seriously, who remembers Trozei?), tha sounds VERY possible... The PP games are two of my favorite pinball games, and great time-wasters to boot.

Pretty much handheld games with some kind of high-score mechanic. So, Tetris, WarioWare and the Game & Watch Gallery titles (which I'm still trying to beat after god knows how long) are usally my picks. Lately I also have been picking up Mario Kart 8 to play online for a while when I got an half hour to spare.
And I agree with the people above saying PKMN Pinball rocks. X and Y has a bit of a gigantic Pokédex, and OR and AS already have Pokémon Pinball RS, so I doubt a new one will happen soon...
Speaking of the eShop Trozei by the way, that's a good timewaster as well.

Usually Columns (no matter which part), Money Idol Exchanger, Crush-Pinball or Fantastic Pinball Kyutenkai or the good old F-Zero X

With Nintendo recently releasing an eShop exclusive sequel to Pokémon Trozei (seriously, who remembers Trozei?), tha sounds VERY possible... The PP games are two of my favorite pinball games, and great time-wasters to boot. Pokemon Trozei (which is surprisingly good even for people who don't like Pokemon) is a puzzle game and puzzle games always sell well. Pinball games on the other hand are kinda niche now (at least comparing to puzzle games) and the only ones you see at home and portable consoles are either big names based on licensed real tables (like The Pinball Arcade) or low budget ones from smaller companies. Pokemon Battle Trozei announcement was a nice surprise. But comparing to the first game which was a nice pick-and-play game, at the sequel you must always have a guide with you in order to catch certain Pokemon with special requirements and many of them is a pain in the ass. Also the learning curve could be better. While I enjoyed the sequel for of the fresh gameplay (instead of just using the same formula) and the rpg elements (which will probably turn off people who have no idea about Pokemon) I prefer the original for the story mode (Battle Trozei has no story at all) and the more relaxed, polished gameplay (of course you can later play the story mode at harder difficulty and the other modes are more challenging in later stages). It's a worthy sequel but my advice is to first play Pokemon Trozei and then Pokemon Battle Trozei.

Pokemon, Dungeon Crawlers, Puzzle Quest, all easily played on auto-pilot while being (half) occupied with something else or just to kill some time.

When I have a few minutes to kill, the game I most often fire up is Fruit Ninja on my iPhone. Other possibilities include Super Stikman Golf, Silverfish, Boost 2...
Otoh, if I'm at home and just want to have some mindless gaming it's likely to be a Metal Slug or something like that...

When I'm exhausted I usually waste my time with Minecraft, the latest Civ or just grinding in whatever RPG I've got unfinished.

I don't really play games in a time-filling capacity, but I've found that beat 'em ups are always perfect when I've just finished some big game and have no idea what to play next. The original arcade version of Final Fight serves this need rather well, in particular.

Tetris on Master Mode.
I don't usually last very long, so makes for a bunch of quick games.
