Goblin is an Italian prog rock band. They still exist now though their glory days are long gone. Massive amounts of video game music from the mid eighties to the late nineties was inspired by them, similar to the influence of Chu Ishikawa, Yellow Magic Orchestra, Tangerine Dream and others. Let's talk about these groups and individuals that had such a huge impact on our favorite type of music. Bringing up direct ripoffs is welcome too but I find the stylistic influence more interesting as it would imply the game composer is more talented than someone just copying someone else's music directly. turrican.mp3turrican2.mp3castlevania.mp3sotn.mp3oldsnkmusic.mp390sdungeoncrawler.mp3

Is this the same Goblin that also did film scores? I know there is an Italian band called Goblin that worked with Dario Argento in the 70's.

It's the same Goblin. They did the soundtracks for Dario Argento's Profondo Rosso and Suspiria.

Cool. They also scored the euro cut of Dawn of the Dead(Zombi). That's where I first heard them.

I actually like Goblin's Euro cut soundtrack a bit more even if the cut lacks the pie to the face and some of the other slapstick moments. Goblin has a really distinct sound that Michiru Yamane/etc. are definitely fans of. Their themes for House by the Cemetary and The Church I put in the opening post are like the ur-Castlevania songs.

The Castlevania-Goblin connection was cool. I probably should listen to more Goblin in the near future. Yellow Magic Orchestra was already mentioned in the opening post, but I think there could be more said about them. For what I heard of them so far, they sometimes sound like 16-bit era video game music made well before that era (like this). Also, I think their music sometimes resembles Earthbound-tracks, maybe because of the nervous synth-trickery and cool soundscapes (like this one). Also, I can't quite pinpoint why, but I get the feeling that there is a lot of soundtracks inspired by industrial rock, like NIN and Ministry. Well, NIN has made game soundtracks so that's one thing.
