Because this is a site about cult games it is fair to assume that what games everybody here plays are not exactly representative of what sells best. However, what about genres? Do most people here play exactly what genres most other people play, or is there some variation? So what genres interest you? Answer this however you like, but I am mostly talking about what genres people like in general. Like what genres everybody like as a genre, rather than just maybe a game or two, but they dislike that genre otherwise. I will start. I enjoy these genres:
fighting shmup run 'n' gun puzzle oozumou pinball dodgeball bowling golf miniature golf classic arcade style arcade vehicle rpg survival horror shooting gallery (Cabal-esque games)
I find that I will give most games a chance if they are of these genres. The general kind of gameplay these genres have I find consistently interesting, whether or not each specific game is actualy good. I do play game of other genres, however. Especialy platformers and wrestling games and several others. I did not mention those because I find that I dislike most games of those genres and their basic premise does not really interest me. It is more that I like other genres' masterpiece level games that trancend genre, rather than that I like other specific genres.

Honestly with me it's genres I'd rather not play, on a sliding scale until I hit games that I have to absolutely play.
Racing/Sport games tend to be at the very bottom of my lists but of course with games being what they are there are some games in the genre I love Like Rollcage, Wipeout, Fzero.
Realistic games that play true to life tend to bore me out really quickly (like Counterstrike) or games that have terrible "realistic" recoil on weapons.
On the otherhand beat'em ups, RPG/FPS hybrids, Zombie focused games, StatRPGs, Lightgun games and RTSs with a heavy focus on unit leveling tend to be my preffered genres (but in no way represent the *only* games I'll play).
Also a game with entertaining 4 player gameplay espcially co-op almost irrespective of genre is always good (no amount of Lanning/Net Games can match 4 people, one TV..one winner)

Most favorite genres: Fighting, Platform, consoles RPG, Third Person Action (not shooting, things like DMC and Shinobi) and Adventure (not Quests, things like Zelda and Metroid).
Genres I love but less than the above: SHMUP, Run 'n Gun, Puzzle, Beat 'em Up, Quests and TBS.
Genres contain only very few games I like: PC RPG, Racing, Sports, RTS and Third Person Shooters.
Genres I absolutely hate: FPS, MMORPG, Simulations and Sims kinds.

Lessee... I'm really, REALLY big on anything action, be it platformer, run-n-gun, third-person, or shmup. Most of my absolutely favorite games fall into this category.
Fighting games rule. I love both one-on-one and beat-em-up style fighters. I went through most of the nineties ignorant to most fighters except Street Fighter. Boy howdy, that sure has changed.
I can't argue with anything old-school, and whenever I pass by a Pac-Man machine in an arcade, I usually can't refuse a play. Thankfully, an arcade close to me has several classics.
I do love puzzle games, as they're fun without being too complicated and make for many hours of addiction. Maybe a bit redundant at times, but when they're so gotdang fast, I can't complain about that.
It's hard for me to accurately judge adventure games, as they're mostly fused with other genres. I do like them, s'long as I don't get lost in them and there are no clues to help me out of my predicament.
My thoughts on RPGs are... uncertain. They're not my favorite genre, as they usually take really lengthy and I'm into games that don't take too long to beat, but have oodles of replay value. Still, I do like RPGs for. I am reminded that I should probably go on to beat Phantasy Stars 2 and 4, seeing as how I liked the original. Usually, I'm not too big on dungeon crawlers... my sense of direction isn't horrible, but there are times when I wander around for seeming infinity, and it drives my brain up the wall. Granted, the original PS did have a big factor of DC in it, but still, it just had some charm that kept me entranced enough to beat the game in four days. Sooooooo... my perspective on RPGs is dicey, but I'll play it if it's good... and if I have enough time.
Most sports games = bleh. Most everything that isn't licensed by a league = great. The gleaming exception is Tecmo Super Bowl, of course. The NFL licensed it, but it rules truly.
Not too big on survival horror... though, I did recently get into Resident Evil, and now I love the series. Still, I'm usually not too fond of giving myself the jibblies. Yes, I am a squalid wuss.
Strategy games... listen, I'm not a dummy, but I want my games to be fast-paced and easy to pick up. Most strategy games are not. The only ones I've really liked so far are Military Madness and Front Mission... and SimCity, if that counts? Or would that be more under simulation? And where would Shining Force fall under? From what little I've played of it, it is very good.
I used to like FPS games... then I sorta grew away from them... now I like them again. Maybe there's way too many of them out now (half of them themed on some type of historical war), but there are some that break the mold of greatness. Speaking of which... I still REALLY need to snag Half-Life 2.
Racing games and me do not get along. In the real world, I'm really not big on cars. I only see them as a means of getting from point A to point B, and point C if need be. I don't know if that has any bearing on why I like VERY few racers. The only exceptions are anything Mario Kart, Outrun and O2, the F-Zero series, the Road Rash games, and Diddy Kong Racing, which is Mario Kart-esque. I think that's all. I can walk on all other racers.
MMORPG's... if I may quote Teen Girl Squad: Augh! Bleh! Ewww! Grugh! No. I almost never look at the multiplayer aspect of games (I am a lone wolf, so to speak), and on games like these... well... I... how do I put this? I play games to escape life, NOT to live another life in virtual reality!
Alrighty... I may add or edit comments later, but them's my thoughts on most genres. Oh, and anything so freaking quirky that it can't really be lumped into a genre? AUTOMATIC WIN. "Na-naaaaaaaa, na-na-na-na-na, na-na-na Katamari Damashiiiiiii..."

I love a lot of genres. I love the sport genre as much as anyone. I love platformers... it was a relevation I had about 11 months ago now that I missed playing platformers. I was a Saturn diehard and suddenly 1 day I realized, where are all the platformers? I knew the SNES was home of this genre, so I headed that way and never looked back.
And, most of the genres you see on SNES are genres I love. Puzzle, 2D fighting, shooters, beat em ups, etc. About the only genre I don't care about -- simulations/S-RPGs. Everything else I like.

I'm a first-person shooter nut. I've played most of the major shooters that have made the market - from Wolfenstein, to Quake 2, to Half-Life 2, up to Prey. I've played plenty of obscure ones (Powerslave/Exhumed), and I routinely work on mods for the Doom engine.
I also love RPG's, at least most of them. PC-style RPG's tend to grate on my nerves with their interfaces and confusing rulesets (I'm lookin' at you, Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, and just about everything else running the AD&D ruleset). Though there are the obvious exceptions...games like Ultima VII, Oblivion, Fallout, and Anachronox (which is technically a console RPG considering they based the battle system on Final Fantasy's).
Heck, I love pretty much every genre - though there are three notable exceptions.
First is sports games. I've never seen the appeal in playing a video game about sports.
Second is racing games. None of them have had good enough gimmicks that make me want to play. Diddy Kong Racing tried valiantly, but when it all boiled down to it, it was still just another kart racing game in my eyes.
Finally, real-time strategy games. I can't think that quickly to be able to manage my fireteams AND make sure my lackeys are harvesting resources AND keep training dudes and researching stuff. modern RTS's are even worse in this regard because there's even MORE stuff to worry about (like AoE3's supply shipments, and of course the camera).

My all time favorite genre would have to be music games. I've fallen in love with that genre since I first played Parapper the Rapper and have been addicted to them since (with DDR being my number one favorite series of music games).
I'm a huge fan of 2D fighters (including beat-em ups) but can not enjoy 3D fighters unless they are on the limited setup like Rival Schools. I think the only 3D fighter I actually enjoyed was the orginal Soul Caliber for the Dreamcast.
Action games are a plus with me, as I love SHMUPS, Run-N-Gun, platformers, and third person games. A little adventure in it is fine with me too.
I don't dig RPGs with a few rare exceptions (Skies of Arcadia, Paper Mario, Chrono Trigger). Don't know why, but I really don't have the patience for them, yet it's odd that I can still play some.
Racing games bore me unless they are of the arcade variety (Burnout series, Road Rash series, F-Zero X, etc.). Can't stand stuff like Project Gotham Racing or Gran Turismo (although I'll admit that I purchased PGR2 so I can get Geometry Wars after playing it's sequel on Xbox Live Arcade).
As for sports, the only things I play are Tennis (Mario Tennis, Virtua Tennis) and boxing (Super Punch-Out!! and Fight Night series). Everything else to me in that regard is trash and I'd rather just play the sport in real life.
Although not a genre, I will definitely play anything that is just weird in general (Katamari Damacy, Sneak King, Rez, etc.)

1. Platformers / Sidescrollers (includes 2D Run & Guns) 2. Shmup 3. Adventure / Action RPG 4. Action (Ninja Gaiden, DMC, ect) 5. "Traditional" RPG 6. Rail Shooters. 7. Rhythm Games 8. Fighting and those are the favorites
I do like FPS games, but they've recently fallen into a pit where original ideas and solid execution have become rarities. Incorporating SIM elements to make it more realistic (like the upcomming 'Rainbow-Six: Kent State') hasn't really piqued my interest.
I also enjoy a good arcade racer. But leave the SIM crap out of it. I LIKE being able to steer and powerslide without having to behave realistically after buying 12 bajillion spare parts.
Sports titles are rarely tollerable for me. When they are, it's often limited to multi-play.
Puzzle games are hit or miss with me. If I don't get it (tetris attack [can't chain worth crap], baku-baku, or Tetris 2), I usually don't like it.

My favorites, without a doubt, are action RPGs. A close second, though, are "Castleroid" games, or any other game that's heavily exploration-based and has one big interconnected world.
I'm also a fan of traditional RPGs, traditional platformers (2D preferred, but 3D platformers are good too), survival horror, music/rhythm games, and future-racers.
Genres I DON'T much care for include strategy RPGs, MMORPGs, fighting games (or any subgenres thereof, such as beat-em-ups, unless the beat-em-ups have platformer elements to keep them interesting [i.e. Battletoads]), sports games other than future-racers, most falling-block puzzlers (though other types of puzzlers are OK), visual novels (unless they're REALLY unusual), sim games, FPSes of ANY kind (and most first-person games in general, with only a handful of exceptions), and... well, really, that's about it.
Anything that falls into a genre outside of this list is fair game. I might like it, I might hate it. Won't know 'til I play it. (:

Mostly Console style RPGs and 1 on 1 fighters, though I don't mind old arcade games and action games.

Well, let's make this simple and narrow it way down by saying that I don't care for the vast majority of non-Japanese developed games. It's not any kind of racist thing nor a bias; it's just that decades of gaming experience has revealed that even as a kid when I had no clue who made the games I played I still gravitated towards Japanese games. While there are exceptions, of course, as a whole Japan just has a different approach to style and gameplay design than the West does. But as far as my own personal exceptions go, I do like a bunch of older Rare-developed titles.
Anyway, to get back to genres, my favorites are RPGs and platformers. I especially have a fondness for strategy RPGs and real-time RPGs. The traditional Final Fantasy/Dragon Quest style games usually don't excite me that much.
Other than that, pretty much everything is fair game. I'm willing to try anything so there's no genre I'll say that I flat out hate because chances are I'd be able to find at least one representative of the genre I could enjoy if I delved deep enough into them. Of course, for genres that largely don't appeal to me that's not really worth the effort.
So I will say that I pretty much don't play at all first-person shooters, online games, and real-time strategy games. When I do play such games it's usually less than once per year and is more of a matter of trying out a game I bought to see if it works okay.
I also don't tend to play sports games except for a handful of non-realistic arcade style ones, like Wii Sports. Similarly, while I can really get into racing games, they usually are futuristic or cart-based, or at the very least they have arcade style gameplay like Ridge Racer.
I like fighters, but I don't play them often, partially because I really suck at them and just can't REALLY get into them like the hardcore fans do. I could probably say roughly the same about music games and survival horror games (the latter also is attributed to the fact that I'd prefer to watch than play because when I'm doing the playing myself I get freaked out).
Other stuff I play but not on a really regular basis includes: action games in general, shmups, puzzle games, simulations (including dating sims), point-and-click games, party games, lightgun/shooting gallery games, beat-em-ups, adventure games, pinball, and, well, probably anything else I've forgotten. o_O
