Second Disclosure: In The Name of the Rose is a good movie too. I haven't played the Euro PC game "The Abbey of Death" that was influenced by it but it looks interesting as well. La Abadía del Crimen is actually an unauthorized adaptation of the Umberto Eco's book.

That makes a lot of sense looking at the game now. Similar trickery was performed with the Blade Runner game because they got authorization to use music made for the film but not the much of the actual film name/content. So the official name of the game is "Blade Runner" ...A Video Game Interpretation of the Film Score By Vangelis.

And then the mirror-image scenario, I'm reminded of Data East (Stern) releasing a Phantom of the Opera pinball table at the height of the musical's popularity, but the license only extended to the original story, not the musical adaptation.

Bugs / Glitches are not the problem. An experienced player's THPS5 review. This list of changes to Tony Hawk's core gameplay is really disappointing to see. Even if Activision hadn't rushed out THPS5 in order to get it in before the fiscal year ended, this game would be shit on accounts of Robomodo's incompetency. I just don't get why Activision keeps this developer working on the series when they've had four games in it now which turned out to be shit.

I think they keep using Robomodo for that reason. Robomodo's specialty is mobile action games based on movies and such, in other words Activision can give them not a lot of money and time and they'll be able to churn out something that sort of functions. Activision's never been a company interested in releasing games that are especially polished outside of Call of Duty. But this is a long running gripe with the company you can read people taking issue with even in reviews of their games from the 80s where people lament how their games are so junky compared their older stuff like H.E.R.O./etc. on the 2600. Plus Tony Hawk HD, while not great, I mean there's something there, it's not like they're completely incompetent. I think if this last one being hyper rushed wasn't the main issue for its many failings than the game would have actually been on the disk. HD has noticeably more modes, significantly greater level complexity from using the old games' levels, etc. But THPS5 is its own thing despite using the same graphics engine. That they didn't use or include ANY content or modes from HD tells me Activision came out of nowhere and was like "just get something working in 8 months here's some $$$ bye." All the best TH games are the best because they were given the time and resources to make them so. Like with TH 1/2/3 the developers got to learn how to skateboard as part of the development process, and Tony Hawk himself played a significant part in planning out how they would control. You know there's no way Activision offered that same level of support to Robomodo's games. The bugs really are what kills it for me though, like even if the game was built around advanced combo and the scoring wasn't broken, none of that would matter in its current state. I don't know if you tried the game yet but I put a few hours into it on Tuesday and those videos are not a joke. Even the most basic maneuvers will fail regularly and send you all over the place (or into the ground). Like I almost didn't stick with it til the actual game finished installing. That redditor is totally right about his second point too. The multiplayer in this game is one of the worst implementations I've ever seen in any skateboarding game ever. Like I'd take the Skate or Die 1 Joust over it. Plus as others have mentioned due to a bug, you have to quit all the way back out to the title menu to change modes/etc., so you're constantly connecting and disconnecting. I just, I might be biased because of how long I worked at GameStop and so how long I got to observe Activision's release habits first hand, but this is even the time of year where they drop the last of their shovelware before Call of Duty. Robomodo's a dev made up of human beings that have to eat like everyone else so if one of the biggest game publishers in history rang and asked me to work with them again I'd put out whatever they wanted however and whenever they wanted too. The game is trash, but realistically if they want to mostly stay small and do cell phone games (they take on and then shed a lot of people for each of these Tony Hawk releases), they can do whatever they want with that now that they can say they worked on a major franchise for the biggest publisher for six years. Even if the games are bad, with cell phone apps and games it's less about good/bad and more about getting it out and supporting it ASAP.

I have not played it myself, no... in part because I don't own an Xbone or PS4. From what I've seen and heard though, if I ever do try it, it definitely won't be through purchasing my own copy for $60. It's a shame how it turned out Maybe I should give Neversoft's Project 8 or Proving Ground a try; the last Tony Hawk game I really played a huge amount of was American Wasteland, which was noticeably lesser in quality than what came before, yet was still entertaining.

I randomly installed THPS3 on both my computers. It's shocking to me how well it still runs, considering how many games from that time period don't run correctly. Just slap in IDKFA into the cheat menu and Doomguy my way through the game.

I think part of why THPS5 being bad is so disappointing to me, is that there really aren't any games like Tony Hawk's Pro Skater that are being made today. At all. At this point I don't really care if Tony Hawk's name is attached to the game or not; I'd just like a new skateboarding game with the mechanics/controls of a game like THUG2.
EDIT: and that doesn't suck

I made a review of this trainwreck www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMoDgXZUcxU&t=0m40sI'm a bit late to the party because we didn't get this game over here before 2nd of October. Damn wikipedia tricked me going to Gamestop on 29th, and I was stupid enough to reserve a copy. This is one case when the PAL delay would've been helpful to consumers, had I not been stupid enough to pay money to reserve a copy.

So what're some of the good Tony Hawk clones you've come to play? I know during the height of your franchise there was quite a few of them.

I have to admit, that moon stage actually looks sort of fun. The idea of activating special moves by pressing L1 and then only being able to do special moves during that time, sounds terrible. Ugh. It's pretty amazing you could unlock every stage in a single day.
One Tony Hawk-esque game that I think is pretty cool is Aggressive Inline. I haven't played a ton of it, but it's actually a really challenging game. It's very hard to do each goal in them, but they're satisfying when you do accomplish them. It also introduced the free-roam sort of approach to level design that the Tony Hawk series would later utilize themselves with THPS4 and onward.

Yeah, the moon level at least showcases some imagination. The warehouse levels are barren wastelands in comparison. But the moon physics get old really quick and you'll constantly have to stomp your deck do the ground in some missions. I think it would've been better suited as a stage you unlock after beating the game, like the original moon level from THPS 2. For that reason I liked the snow stage the best. It has a few branching paths, the power up is nonintrusive if useless and it's one of the best looking stages. So what're some of the good Tony Hawk clones you've come to play? I know during the height of your franchise there was quite a few of them. SSX series, Aggressive Inline. I liked the demos that came with some of the Tony Hawk games (Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX, Shaun Murray's Pro Wakeboarder), but I never bought the full games to see what they were like. Also never got into BMX XXX, but I recall it getting decent reviews. There's also Airblade and its prequel on Dreamcast. Those were futuristic hoverboard games. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disney's_Extreme_Skate_Adventure en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disney's_Extremely_Goofy_Skateboarding These were decent kiddified versions from what I recall.

Finally got around to trying THPS4 (only took a year, haha) and I'm enjoying it so far. I'm not yet sold on the open-world format and the voice acting is pretty embarrassing, but man are the tricking mechanics still fun to play around with!
