Turtles in Time is my favorite, and you've got to play the actual arcade version: aside from allowing four players it's much more fast-paced and flashy. I think Arabian Magic is another really solid 4-player arcade beat-em up that doesn't get enough recognition; it uses the setting well and doesn't get as repetitious as other beat em ups. Ninja Baseball Bat Man and Streets of Rage 2 are also great.

Oh, yes, TMNTIV, Arabian Magic, and NBBM are also great mentionables. The latter's title is sort of fun to say, admittedly. I need to dedicate some time to that game.
Streets of Rage 2 is by far my favorite Bare Knuckle game. I have fond childhood memories of that one.

I'd say Violent Storm is probably one of the best beat-em-ups there is for the arcade. It'd be hard to say if it's THE best, considering that we're still considering some amazing stuff like Ninja Baseball Bat Man and Denjin Makai 2, but it's pretty close. Being totally honest, my problem with a lot of beat em ups is that so many of them start off great, but they have an awful habit of just going on and on and refusing to please end. I'd say a true mark of a beat-em-ups quality is how long it takes for that point to set in while you're playing it, and Violent Storm is one of the few games where it never even reaches that point at all, at least for me.
Even something as good as Undercover Cops tends to get really boring by the time you reach the end. And then there's... there's Sengoku 3. We don't talk about Sengoku 3.
On a more positive note, man, nobody ever talks about Ninja Baseball Batman. It basically takes off from where Undercover Cops left off, but it has way more enemy variety, more goofiness, more moves, and basically more, well, everything. Yet it always gets ignored, for whatever reason.

Speaking of which, the creator did s YouTube interview for Mamecade a while back: It was originally intended to be a singleplayer platformer ("Mario-style adventure game").

I just now remembered another beat-em-up I always liked, which was by Noise Factory during their early years: Gaia Crusaders. Which was always pretty cool to play, I thought. And generally better than Sengoku 3, which shared the same game engine.
Also, am I the only one who doesn't like the early Golden Axe games? They just never clicked with me. Probably why I preferred the Sega Ages version of the first one far more over it than anything else. Though the arcade sequel, The Revenge of Death Adder, is by far the best of them all, in my opinion.

alphex said: Streets Of Rage 2 This is the most complete game on the list. Pretty much all the criticism stems from its prequel and sequel: Part 1 has even better atmosphere and musicTrue dat.

Growl: Can't believe nobody listed this one yet! 4 rednecks out punching other rednecks and women to save animals o.o. It has to be the most awesomely bad game ever.
X-Men Arcade: Another fun beat'em up. I was probably the only person who enjoyed playing Dazzler. Even if I had to sit on the edge of the machine looking in the corner, I liked her =3.
The Simpsons: Demo screen= "BLARGH BLARGH BLAEGH WAAW WAAW WAAW"... Shout out if you know what I mean ~.^
Alien vs. Predator: A great Capcom beat'em up.
Dungeons and Dragons: Shadow Over Mystara: Might be pushing it at 1996, but this was kind of like the crowning achievement after so many years of awesome beat'em ups.

Oh, geez, how could I forget this one? Mick Dundee, Indiana Jones, and a pair of pro wrestlers take on the biggest hordes of baddies that any 90s beat-em-up could possibly process. Blow up dudes with rocket launchers, set loose a lion or two to help you out, throw boulders at a muscleman wearing dynamite, and then take on the fearsome Sallah Sextuplets. This game gets absolutely ridiculous and it's amazing.

I really like Sengoku 3, the problem is just that by level 4, the bullshit and tedious enemies with tons of invulnerability come in masses. This REALLY makes the game drag.
The original Golden Axe was a fun game, and it was the first good beat 'em up port for DOS. The arcade sequel is much better, but the original has aged just fine. I can only imagine what kind of fireworks Sega might have set off with an arcade sequel to Streets Of Rage 2.
I was not aware of Shounen Ninja Sasuke, but it looks absolutely fantastic. Thanks for the heads up!
I've yet to play Undercover Cops, Denjin Makai 2 and NBBM. I suppose for the former two, the arcade versions are the way to go?
Also, has anybody here played Gekido Advance? The premise (combining a beat 'em up with adventure elements) really intrigues me, but it seems quite clunky watching it on Youtube. I'm considering getting it (a local store's been keeping a copy for years), but for the same money, I could also buy Advanced Guardian Heroes (which I've also never played).

Growl is awesome, but I wouldn't say it's good. On the other hand, the huge explosions, voice clips, animal helpers, and ridiculous final battle with "the king of the poachers" reminds me why there are a lot of times I'd rather play an awesome game than a good game.

Here are my choices: Mad Stalker: Full Metal Force (1994) - This and Capcom's Alien VS. Predator arcade were influential for the creation of Treasure's Guardian Heroes. The BGM composed by Keishi Yonao sounds memorable (especially some of the Fujitsu FM Towns version). And did you know that its prototype was this? Take that and combine it with Irem's Spartan X series and you'll get Mad Stalker. Genocide Square (1993) - This is the two original Sharp X68000 titles in one Fujitsu FM Towns CD pack. The first one was remade. Both feature X68000 and MIDI versions of the soundtracks of both games. NEW Zero Team (1993) - Not many think of this. It's well-done and I'm a big fan of Go Sato. Ninja Baseball Bat Man (1993) - The MAME version needs more tweaks to perfection. This game is very attractive and action-packed, as well as comedic. Big Fight: Big Trouble in the Atlantic Ocean (1992) - This is Tatsumi Electronics at its best. It's a beat 'em up/fighting game hybrid.

- The Guardians (Denjin Makai II) A 'duh' entry. + Cyberpunk theme. - Night Slashers One of the more overall satisfying entries in Beat'em up with a great horror theme. - Vendetta One of the best weapon selection and it's use in beat'em up. - Violent Storm As said great pacing, perfect enemy health balance. Too bad about the Konami Beat'em Up Boss Syndrome. Great Road Warrior-like post apocalyptic theme. - D.D. Crew I vouched my love for it before against the hatred. But underneath lies a satisfactionate crowd control game. - Undercover Cops Alpha Renewal Some pacing problems at the end. Another great Road Warrior-like post apocalyptic theme. - Shadow Force While the 1 on 1 targeting system can make it feel tedious... I kind of have a fond memory for it with a nice movelist and great character roster. + Cyberpunk theme. - Final Fight The original final fight had great balance as a crowd control game, the megacrush was balanced for this and the enemy number is still impressive to this day. - Zero Team - I thought the original was supposed to be superior to New Zero Team (and not for the correct stage order, but something else I could not remember. Something being technical superior). - Big Fight: Big Trouble in the Atlantdic Ocean Like Violent Storm I think Big Fight does pacing right. Though it also suffers from Konami syndrome (for a Tatsumi game). - Battle Circuit A late entry, I kind of prefer it over other capcom beat'em up games not called Final Fight even if it might be a bit inferior gameplay wise, because it has that nice pulpy science fiction theme to it that reminds me of Flash Gordon or Space Adventure Cobra. I also have a fondness for Mutation Nation but moreso for it's theme then for the game. Same for Ninja Combat OOPS Outside the timeframe, but I really enjoy Road of the Sword/The Gladiator a lot. It's my favorite IGS beat'em up. I like the fighting system the best, with the moveslot. As for inferior console brothers, I still kind of like SOR2 and SOR3 the best. The Saturn version of Nekketsu Oyoko, which has a bigger movelist and more combo-friendly physics then the PSX version. And for the comepletely inferior SNES with it's low enemy count thanks to poor processing power... i have a fondness for Gourmet Sentai Bara Yarou with it's big movelist with unconventional input methods, cyberpunk theme and overall weirdness. And Sonic Blast Man II, has a nice theme to it. I also have a strange fondness for Cosmo Police Galivan II... more for it's theme then for the game itself which is bordering Kusoge. I'm a big fan of Ninja Warriors (Again) too, but it's kind of outside the genre.

loempiavreter : Ninja Warriors Again is indeed a hybrid , since it keeps the gameplay on a single lane. But it is just too good a game, ans it incoporates too many beat'em up conventions for it not to make the list! Great list, BTW. You love beat'em ups! An awesome, unknown beat'em up. Unique.

Beware of Bebe's Kids. I'm sure you would rather play Galaxy Keiji Gayvan, Legionnaire, Knuckle Bash, Big Fight, Burning Fight, Cosmo Police Galivan II and Nekketsu Oyako (especially Saturn version).
And don't forget the Spartan X series, including Vigilante. The first game was created by Takashi Nishiyama, who later went on to create Street Fighter 1 and some early SNK fighting games.

I never understood why ALIEN STORM (SEGA) was maligned, underrated you might say, in its day. It plays like a parody of Golden Axe, the characters are... satyrical (especially the Elvis-clone with a Ghostbusters backpack you could play as), I always find myself playing it here and there, and I always have great fun. So why not more recognition?
The gameplay variations, the unusual weapons (laser beams), the industrial music and the fun factor of this game are excellent. I know I still play it.
