I really loved the Hook arcade game, specially the character design. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zz3xpzy8aAYumm, I didn't noticed it back the time but now looks a lot like Undercover Cops also made by Irem.

I wouldn't say it's one of the best, but I constantly find myself replaying The Combatribes just out of sheer fun. There are few things more satisfying than mashing two clowns' heads together.
Return of Death Adder is brilliant, not just because of its mechanics, but because of its set pieces. Playing with a friend and getting off one of those double-team piledrivers is really thrilling.
Metamorphic Force by Konami is also a lot of fun and a highly underrated beat'em up in general.
Alien vs. Predator is probably my favorite of the lot, though. The combo system, hit detection accuracy, and general mechanics are spot on.
I'd also like to give a shout-out to the surprisingly awesome Sailor Moon arcade beat'em up. It doesn't even make sense how good it is.

what do you guys think of the Tenchi wo Kurau series? I've heard good things about it, and have a friend who's really into Chinese history/mythology, so been meaning to try it out. Also comes up in this interview I'm working on atm, hehe

Going through a list I did for another forum...
1. Alien Vs. Predator - Just sheer overwhelming grandeur. 2. Streets of Rage Remake - I can't pick one SOR... PICK'EM ALL! 3. The Simpsons - Konami never did the TMNT-style hack and slash beat 'em up better than here 4. Cadillacs and Dinosaurs - Surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet. 5. Vendetta - Best move set this side of Double Dragon Advance.

4. Cadillacs and Dinosaurs - Surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet. I'm more surprised nobody has mentioned Guardian Heroes yet. Isn't that one supposed to be an absolute classic?

Growl is an awesome one. It's the sort of game I would design. Batshit insane only barely covers it. TMNT is great Punisher is great Streets of Rage 2 is god tier But the one I'll always have a soft spot for is Sengoku. I know, it's not the best, but it blew my mind when it was new. Changing into different characters and jumping up into the clouds to fight in... I don't even know. Then there's the trippy fight on top of a horse stampede. How was that even supposed to work? I just loved that game and no amount of telling me it was sub-par will ever change that.

alphex : Let's make SOR Remake an Honorable Mention. It is, by definition, an exception. It deserves to be mentioned, as the special project that it is: a perfect homage to the games this thread is about. Brilliant job tallying all the contributions, thanks for that!

I mentioned it on page 2. You mentioned it, true enough, but only in the context that you felt Mad Stalker was influential for it. Or did I misread your choices? :/ @colonel: Thanks! I just updated and revamped the list accordingly. SOR2 is clearly as popular as its reputation would have one assume, but Ninja Baseball Bat Man and Final Fight fared not as expected.

^2 things to keep in mind.
1) The internet almost never reflects what's actually popular.
2) You didn't ask for favorites, you asked for the "very best." That's going to make one think of what looks, plays, sounds, etc., better than the rest, rather than what ones personal favorites are.
Hopefully the ones with those qualities do become ones favorites, but often times it seems nostalgia, or a nostalgic license, takes precedence...

The thing about Final Fight 1 and Double Dragon it is that they are the fathers of the genre. They are the first drafts and every game after them improved the formula by various means, even DD2 it is nothing but an improved remake of the first game.
They have their place in the genre history but they can't be just the best.
Compare Super Mario Bros with SMB3 or World.

Streets of Rage 2 4 eva. <3 That game blew my mind the very first time I played it as a child, and I still love it. I love the music and stages. One of my favorites is the one that references Alien.

<-Well, I'll always throw a vote for that. What counts as "early" though? If '95, and let's face it, you brought up Battle Circuit from '97 yourself... I was not really aiming for "early", I was aiming for the "Golden Age", when beat'em ups reigned supreme. Armored Warriors, was a late comer, and "Battle Circuit" came well after the golden age; I consider it Capcom's last hurrah. I don't know, I'd say from Final Fight (double dragon was a bit early, it was the fondation of the genre, really", I'd say from Final Fight to the mid-nineties. But if you have a late comer, like Battle Circuit, that you really love, just go ahead and add it, just like I did - except this is not my top five, but more a list to get things started. Ooops,no, I said it was my top five. So there you go. Let's make this your fave beat'em ups ever...The examples I gave in the the second post were very weak. Sorry. Rockers: Seems I already answered your question once, man. It's the faves. I already made a post to explain that to you already, as seen above. Judging video games when doing your personal top five is a bit like judging figure skating, but where the artistic note counts foe two thirds and the technical only a third, I guess. The artistic being the design, the gameplay, the pleasure the game gives you, the affinity you have to the A/V style of the game, the settings, the humor, even the nostalgia factor. It must be a well-done game, for sure; but it must also have the "it" factor which puts it in your top five. It's the only way to define which games actually are for you, the very best of the genre. This thread has faith in your tastes. Your absolute favorites are the very best of their genres... For you. Don't be afraid to be subjective somewhat.
