Sonic Xtreme is a game that makes me think of how important it once was. Like, how Sega Saturn would have turned out if this game succeeded, if it inspired other 3D platformers as Mario 64 did.. At this point Sega's fate was starting to turn with problems over failed add-ons and poor decisions however.
As a game, I think Xtreme looked interesting but I think the fish lens display would have drove me nuts. Graphically, I think Sonic needed something closer to Sonic R and Sonic World from Jam which were more impressive and competitively more compelling against the Rareware games and Crash/Spyro.
JUST PUT SONIC ON RAIls- damn it, sonic runners
MAKE IT LIKE THE CLASSICS- SONIC FUCKIN' FOUR? MY GOD, ARE YOU KIDDING ME?
Hmm.
You know what? I think Sonic, as is, doesn't really gel into a video game for me - especially since every concept we as fans are presented with makes us more indecisive.
What DO we want as Sonic fans, anyway? Fast platforming action? Puzzle-solving? Something even wackier?
I liked most of the Sonic games I played. I just don't want something like Shadow, 06 and the Storybook games. I liked the 3D Sonic games and the spinoffs just fine and grew up playing Sonic. Truth be told, I just think most fans want quality control and familiar design. Even if it comes in the form of Adventure 3.
Thing is, we had these all along but people hated Dimps and shunned the games and eventually we just gotten handheld editions of the console games and Sonic 4 which was exactly the attempt you are describing but without the care of trying to perfectly emulate what made classic Sonic worked. This was a common problem with reviving classic series, all these companies had no idea what the fans wanted. A real missed opportunity to not be more creative again really.
But I think we are in a better position, ever since Colors came out. We gotten into more consistency with Sonic elements and quality control is at its best. I know people don't like Lost World, but I really hope they work with it again, but reception tells me they will scrap it for something else again. Generations 2, in gameplay, should be in consideration.

I just want Generations 2. That's all. I mean, it had its issues, sure, but in terms of controls, level design, and content, it was way better than any of the 3D games before it, easily. If we lived in a perfect world, we'd have a new 2D Sonic that actually looked and played like the Genesis games before it, done by the guys who did the recent ports of 1, 2, and CD. But Sega are terrible, so we don't.
