It's not so much as the specs are so high, it's that the Core i5 is a REALLY powerful processor, but 500 megs of ram alongside a integrated video card are really incongruent with the CPU reqs, not to mention the graphics for the game don't seem to really need anything else than some low-end dual core to be honest.
Checking out the forums, apparently this was a mistake though.

Yep, I figured based on the graphics that a Core i3 would suffice.... Even the specs for the 2D indie games are getting up there... Guess I stick to emulating old stuff.

An i5 M460 is a five year-old laptop processor, slower than desktop equivalents. Intel HD graphics is built into the CPU, but if you're used to playing games on a computer you'll probably be using a vastly more powerful graphics card instead.
In other words, if you bought a computer in the last decade that isn't a netbook or a tablet you should be able to run it, those requirements are very low.

I'm not a big PC person, so you'll forgive my ignorance, but... what does that mean, exactly? I have no idea what an "Intel Core i5" or "Intel HD Graphics" are -- I'm used to a more sliding scale that deals with "Pentium 2" or "Pentium 3" and nVidia graphics cards with numbers after them and such. I'm guessing by your reactions that those are like, ultra-ritzy specs or something? I've got a decent gaming PC, so I'm just going to assume mine will be able to play it -- but maybe not. I guess we'll see in mid-May! -Tom If you've got a decent, not too old, desktop gaming PC you should have no problem with this game.

Core 2 duo are like a decade old though. It's weird how these amazing new CPU's have been wallowing on their own diminishing returns of tech progress. Dual Core PCs are still used as office equipment.

Just bought this during the Steam sales, it's really quite good from what I've seen 3 hours in, especially the truly alien backgrounds and the glitched world idea. I don't unerstand all this talk of high specs when it works perfectly on my modest laptop with no issues at all. The only thing I dislike is that Trace is the dorkiest, most unappealing scientist main character since the protagonist of Out Of This World/Another World. But that one at least was world-famous and had a cool car!

Trace becomes much cooler once you get into his backstory.
Anyway, this is probably my favorite of the indie Metroidvanias, it really captures the atmosphere in the way that the others don't quite grab, even though it relies a little too much on Metroid's background designs, especially in the early stages. There's still a bunch I need to play though (Phantom Rebirth, Rabi-Ribi, Unepic, etc.)

Yeah, Trace gets pretty cool as the game goes on, though I do wish the story weren't quite as... cryptic... as it is. I appreciate a good mystery, but I also like it when it's actually possible to SOLVE that mystery, which it really isn't with the information presented in Axiom Verge. Too much of what happened to Trace is left entirely up to the player.
It's still a great game, though. Definitely top-tier, though I much prefer La-Mulana, Unepic, Ghost 1.0, and even Strider 2014 (if that counts). But there's not a damned thing wrong with Axiom Verge -- and considering it's a one-man show, it's genuinely impressive.
I too need to play Rabi-Ribi, however... and I've actually never heard of Phantom Rebirth! Will have to look into that.

About Rabi-Ribi, the bullet hell part scares me a bit but otherwise I'm interested. Okay so I'm going to be less harsh on Trace from now on!

Oh yeah, be prepared for an ambiguous ending and to spend some time Googling to figure out what it all means. There are a few variations though the last time I checked no one could quite figure out what the exact requirements were (probably related to item/map clearance of course but no specific numbers). I loved the story overall personally, and it's one of the main things that makes it stand out from Metroid (or any similar game, it's a subgenre not really known for decent plotlines).

I dunno, La-Mulana's plot is pretty outstanding, and extraordinarily subtle in its storytelling -- part of the reason I love that game so much is because it's just such a carefully crafted experience with such deep and involved lore. It's an extremely difficult game, on multiple levels, but if you have the chance (and the perseverance) to play through it, I'd strongly recommend it. It leaves a real lasting impression. Ghost 1.0's story is pretty rad too, though it's also really straightforward -- subtle and deep, it is not. It's just good, classic sci-fi storytelling. -Tom
