Well, it seems pretty clear that no-one can ignore the mobile market anymore. And that includes us, the few, the proud, the hardcore, as they say. Articles about mobile gaming have started appearing on this very site, Derboo has launched a project about the first mobile games (or is it someone else? I'd say it's him). We all have, if not a tablet, at least a phone, we're all players, so by now it's hard to believe we haven't all played and/or bought our fair share of mobile games.
I personally went Apple a long time ago, so Ios platforms are where I am. I have an IPhone and an IPad. And even though I had reaaally slowed down these two last years, I do play on them, of course. And these days, I'm playing on my IPad quite a bit again.
The Cave, Inc. Bullet Hell shooters are all on my IPad all the time, and God have I played them. Zen Pinball is always here somewhere, too, and Real Racing 2 (but rarely 3) is in there. Actually, I've spent hundreds of bucks building a huuge library of games, starting in 2010. Apart from those which aren't updated, which is maybe becoming the bigest argument against buying games on mobile these days, I still have them all, and There is a good mix of recent highly hyped games and older favourites installed on my Ipad.
Which platform do you use and, most importantly, which games do you play, and which are the best you've played on mobile through the years?
Yeah, that's right, this thread is going mobile, too, like all the rest, because let's be honest: there IS some mighty fine playing to do on mobile, and it's going to get better every day. Now that we have mourned the new focus on mobile, let's see what all these developpers can do, right? So, what do you play?

I WOULD be playing Puzzle & Dragon if I actually owned a smartphone. 'course, it's on 3DS now too, so I might just go with that instead.

I own android devices, and am not averse to gaming on them now and again. I'm rather fond of the Asphalt series, though Asphalt 8 is dangerously close to what I'd consider horrific free-to-play bullshit shenanigans. It is possible to fully enjoy the game without paying though, so it just scrapes by. Mechanically though, the series is great - really nice gameplay and visuals. Final Freeway 2R is also one of my favourite games on the platform. OutRun with a kick. Gorgeous visuals and awesome handling. I also adore anything by Kumobius. Bean's Quest is one of my favourite games (and soundtracks) of all time, as is Time Surfer

Oh, very well, I'll get the ball rolling then...
My recent acquisitions, that I have been playing quite a bit these last weeks, were
AGRacing, a Wipeout/F-Zero-styled racer (no weapons) with pretty splendid graphics and a fantastic sense of speed. Fortunately, the controls are not accelerometer-only, you can use the touchscreen, which is perfect for an arcade racer. The gameplay is pretty awesome, and the futuristic landscapes are great, with humongous buildings and flying vehicles everywhere. On the minus side, it makes you grind a little bit, and the number of courses is a tad limited, but a big "coming soon" on Tier 3 races indicates updates should remedy that. At 4 bucks, it's a buy. No further IAP.
Implosion: Never Lose Hope: As it's gloriously melodramatic name somewhat implies, this Devil May Cry-styled game comes from China. It's a very pretty game, and a very, very fun hack'n'shoot('n'slash) with a cool sci-fi theme and robotic protagonist. It's long enough, featuring a pretty deep customization system which lets you choose between several magic-type super strikes. The music is orchestrated and all. You use a futuristic sword, with a good time-based combo system and of course a ballistic weapon as a last resort. It's premium-priced (10 bucks), but no further IAP is required.
Implosion: Never Lose Hope
Halo Spartan Strike: the really superior sequel to Spartan Assault, a twin-stick shooter that also exists on PC and XBOX machines, it's actually a very good game, which plays much more strategically than usual twin-stick shooters. Planning your assault and weapon scavenging are required. The game has perfect production values. It looks and sounds gorgeous, plays like a dream, and controls almost perfectly. Also, it's long-ish, and there are no IAP. It's a bit of a must-have, even if you don't care about Halo. I don't really know what the existence of this game on Ios achieves for MIcrosoft, but if what Nintendo have in mind fore their mobile releases is of this quality, then I'm on-board with it.

I play Final Fantasy Record Keeper from time to time. I really like this type of mobile game. It's fun to play FF battle one after another. I just don't really get anywhere with since I refuse to pump money into it.
Other than that just a couple quick play puzzle games that I pull out when I have a few minutes to kill. 3s and Super Hexagon.
I would have more if the majority of my iPhones memory wasn't filled with my son's 12 different Angry Birds games. I play those once in a while to help him progress through. Admittedly, some of them can be fun. Especially the Transformers one. He now names all his Transformers toys by their AB counterparts names though.

I've had Android phones ever since I switched to smart phones, but I don't play much on it. On my current phone I've got one bullet hell Shmup and one Angry Birds game.
There may be a handful of games I'm interested in. Like Calculords for example, or some indie games, but between the fact that I really dislike the controls on phones, and the fact I've got about a dozen or so other systems I can get games for, I'm not in a hurry to spend any money on mobile games.
In fact, I've never ever spend a single cent on an app of any form.
I am quite curious about Nintendo/DeNa's games, though. I just hope there will not be iOS exclusive games or bulldookie like that, and if they start pulling mictrotransition crap like the PKMN company is starting to do...

I WOULD be playing Puzzle & Dragon if I actually owned a smartphone. +1 Too bad P&D doesn't run in Bluestacks. I guess there is P&D&Mario now, but at 30€ that's not gonna happen soon. I'm also not gonna lie to myself: I'd totally be the guy that has all the Tamagotchi-likes on the phone, like Survive Mola Mola and such.

I proudly do NOT own a phone that can play all those mobile games, neither a tablet. Everytime I play mobile games on someone elses device, I get angry about the controls so fast I have to stop for the sake of my own sanity. I just can't stand touch controls. Maybe I'm getting out of touch with today's digital world. Lol.

I consider the XBox 360 controller to be one of the best, if not THE best, controller designs ever made, and prefer playing Smash Bros 4 on my 3DS over using the Wii U tablet. Touch screen controls are versatile but as far as I can tell sacrifice ergonomics for multifunctionality. Our fingers instinctively want to grab things and tablets go against this urge.

A couple of years ago I played Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja and they were fun...for about 5 minutes, I don't play anything like that these days, if I use my phone to kill some time I usually listen to a podcast or whatever.
I can understand why these things exist and why people play them, what I can't understand is how they're able to compete direct with real video games, when you get publishers like Konami focusing on that over real video games well....it's absurd to me.

Maybe it is our generation? We all grew up with physical buttons, be it on a gamepad, joystick or keyboard, for playing games. Today's kids get used to touch controls very fast at a very young age. Most children who have acces to these devices can handle it way better than me.

Does an MP3 Player count? Else the answer is plain nothing. Though I have to say that I absolutely hate capacitive touchscreens

I used to be big into mobile games, actually. Stuff like "Mr. Aaaaah!" and "Beat Sneak Bandit" and what have you. They're pretty good if you know what to look for.
Nowadays it's either ports of existing games or nothing. Since I've been in a Doom craze, I've got Doom and Wolfenstein loaded up on my iPhone - but it's hardly ever that I'll sit down and play them... At least, on a phone.

I tried playing Vice City on my Android tablet, it was godawful. Republique on the other hand is designed for touch controls. As someone else said, I'd rather stick to a physical controller anyday.

I only have a few games on my iPhone, but rarely play any of them. I have The Quest, Metal Slug Defense, Cthulhu Saves the World, Rogue Touch, and QuestLord. Out of all of those I've only beaten QuestLord, but I have put a lot of time into Rogue Touch. I've barely touched The Quest or Cthulhu Saves the World, and I just recently downloaded Metal Slug Defense. That's really the extent of my mobile gaming experience.
