"I am not a lawyer" and all of that, but I think a lot of it has to do with visual distinction. Like, in the case of Tetris, the issue is that all of the clones that were produced in the 90s looked just like Tetris, so it could be easily confused or mistaken for an official product. All of these Puzzle Bobble clones, they look much different on the surface.
As mentioned earlier in the thread, you can't sue basic on game mechanics.

LINE's Puzzle Bobble I already mentioned is also official. Hmm, I thought you couldn't sue based on game mechanics. No one is stopping you suing, it's just whether you can actually win. Maybe someone else can remember but I'm pretty sure there was a relatively recent case where a company made a rather blatant clone of an existing title and got lawyered successfully. You mean Zuma for ripping off PuzzLoop? www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/130214/soapbox_ripping_off_japan__.php?page=3

Kinda love the weasel words there. The game was not "perceived to be offensive", it IS offensive. They may as well have said, "We apologize if our game offended some people."

Honestly I think Tetris would be more of a Guantanamo Bay thing. I'm awful.

Didn’t Capcom unsuccesfully try to sue ovee Fighter’s History in the 90’s? I will never, ever understand how Data East got hit with a lawsuit, and SNK never did for Art of Fighting. I mean, it has this guy, and his name is Ryo. Ryo. I mean, sure, we got Dan out of it, but how the crap did SNK get off so lightly?

Also didn't Data East did excact the same thing with FACE over the mechanics of Money Idol Exchanger and actually succeeded somehow? But how did they got out the PSN version then? oO' Anyway all those modern puzzler clones already deserve to be sued for their buttugly art direction and any lack of aesthetics alone

Kinda love the weasel words there. The game was not "perceived to be offensive", it IS offensive. They may as well have said, "We apologize if our game offended some people." Sadly, that's what most people instinctively do is assume some kind of faux-neutrality even when something's very clear cut. As for the main topic, I first played Puzzle Bobble as Frozen Bubble more than 10 years ago, so this has been going on for a long time.

As for the main topic, I first played Puzzle Bobble as Frozen Bubble more than 10 years ago, so this has been going on for a long time. I know that Puzzle Bobble rip-offs exist for a long time but the thing is that they were mostly browser games or java phone games which weren't as popular as the official ones for consoles and PC. But now with the popularity of smartphone and social media games and with Taito not supporting Puzzle Bobble as good as they used to, it's no wonder that most casual and non gamers are much more familiar with the rip-offs and less with the original. This part is interesting: Unfortunately even today, illegal immigrants are treated like that. Also this game reminds me an old adult parody for computers named Sex Tetris (it's the first result at Google search). Anyone else remember it?

I think part of the problem is more the execution. Some of the characters are way happier than they should be in that situation.

Here is an arcade bootleg game based on Puzzle Bobble featuring Winnie the Pooh at the first stage and with character resembling the human forms of Bub and Bob from Bubble Bobble.
