Try to make a puzzle game that has even a tiny resemblance with Tetris and Tetris Company will sue you for copyright violation and force you to remove your game from the market. Make a shameful Puzzle Bobble rip-off? And nothing happens. That's why the market is full of Puzzle Bobble rip-offs, especially at social media and smartphones. Bubble Witch Saga and Angry Birds Stella POP are two famous examples. Then again they 're made from companies which are infamous for making rip-off of other famous games. But now? Even Disney released their own Puzzle Bobble rip-off: play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.disney.thoughtbubbles_goo

This is what I don't understand with this industry. Square-Enix were not okay with Chrono Resurrection/Crimson Echoes (two non-profit fan projects) happening, yet they don't seem to mind the ideia of people making a buck by ripping-off their Puzzle Bobble IP.

Maybe there's two separate divisions of Squenix involved and the right hand doesn't know what the left hand (isn't) doing?

What's the ip history? Isn't bust-a-move older than puzzle bobble, or are they the same thing?

Bust a Move was just a nonsensical rename for whatever reasons. Especially as the first game was known as Puzzle Bobble everywhere. There's now even a clone in Minecraft, and the guy calls it a remake of "Bubble Shooter"
This makes me wanna cry

Oh, did SE have Taito’s IPs now? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taito_CorporationSquareEnix is Taito's parent company. That's why Taito's console games like Space Invaders Extreme and Space Bust-A-Move were published by SquareEnix. Good thing that they didn't closed Taito like Konami did with Hudson. Bust a Move was just a nonsensical rename for whatever reasons. Especially as the first game was known as Puzzle Bobble everywhere. There's now even a clone in Minecraft, and the guy calls it a remake of "Bubble Shooter" This makes me wanna cry From the video's description:

What's the ip history? Isn't bust-a-move older than puzzle bobble, or are they the same thing? Same thing. Bust-A-Move is the NA title, Puzzle Bobble is the Japanese, and maybe EU, title. (I'm not sure on that, but I think the PAL SNES version was still called Puzzle Bobble)

I don't know about the SNES version but any other versions at Europe were renamed Bust-A-Move at their consoles releases (including the game that was released at 3DS). Only at the arcades they keep the original name Puzzle Bobble. For a weird reason, LINE's Puzzle Bobble has the same name at english release: play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.naver.SJLGPBAs I have mentioned already in other threads, stay away from LINE's Puzzle Bobble. It's that awful.

I doubt it but maybe the Disney one is a Official puzzle bobble game after all one lion king PC game was a puyo puyo clone but had compile in its credits. Saying that the latest ios/android Puyo puyo game outside japan sega removed everything Puyo puyo from the game though puyo puyo is still in Hatsune Miku project Mirai on 3ds outside japan.
Even in the 90s they was Puzzle Bobble rip off like the snood series and beehive bedlam though that was a free uk satellite box game though.

Hmm, I thought you couldn't sue based on game mechanics.

Oddly enough, there is an official Puzzle Bubble, on Android at least. Though it seems to be Amazon App Store only. It's pretty good, but has a few customary free-to-play annoyances. Needs to an internet connection, has (optional) Facebook integration, and does the thing where you can only play 5 rounds in 30 minutes. if you have a short fuse for these sort of things, you'll probably get riled up really quickly, but I still got a lot of enjoyment out of it, and would be completely willing to buy an "unlocked" version for a few bucks.

Hmm, I thought you couldn't sue based on game mechanics. No one is stopping you suing, it's just whether you can actually win. Maybe someone else can remember but I'm pretty sure there was a relatively recent case where a company made a rather blatant clone of an existing title and got lawyered successfully.

Oh, patent trolling, how fun.
Didn’t Capcom unsuccesfully try to sue ovee Fighter’s History in the 90’s?
