I could never get Shogo to run on my PCs for some odd reason (same as Blood, same engine I believe). The idea was awesome though. Blood uses the build engine (Same as Duke 3D), so it runs fine on Windows 7/8 on DOSbox. I recommend giving it a try, it has some of the best action in all of the old school FPSs (like Shadow Warrior, it's very gory).

dskzero is probably thinking of Blood 2, which IS the same engine as Shogo (Lithtech)

That's another mediocre game I've meant to play for like a decade by now. Next to Tekwar and that medieval game. Marathon 2 still keeps me busy but since I already killed off most of the stuff I had to do at the office I can play it somewhat freely. It's MUCH harder than the first. You should try the IOS ports of Marathon 1-2. The controls are hell, it's a nightmare.

That's impressive considering that even with proper WASD + mouse I always felt like I was steering an angry, rocket-propelled hockey puck.

Yeah, I figured that much out too. the controls in these games are discutable at best no matter the input method.

Marathon's physics engine is really the worst part of the game. There is a point though (which is to allow some semi platforming) but the inercia the game forces on you it's incredibly annoying. The game itself is definitely fine. I'm going to start Infinity now which is apparently some mindscrew of epic proportions. It can't be worse than Durandal, which dropped the ball terribly by the final stage.

Me neither. Back in the day I played a bit of Quake and Heretic, tried only recently Duke3D, but spent a lot of time with Blood. I found the first episode in a bundle of random shareware stuff a friend of mine sent me (do you miss the shareware era?) and was hooked. I spent a lot of time looking for all the secrets, even finding the secret stages, but especially kicking zombie heads and blowing up those stupid cultists ( Maranax Pallex!!!). Never tried Blood 2 because all accounts point to it being a derivative, edgy, boring title and I don't want to ruin my memories of the first one.

Blood really appealed to me because I'm a huge horror movie fan and there was little I enjoyed the most than finding Jack Torrance frozen in a maze or the siluethe of Psycho in a window. It was incredibly awesome. The game wasn't perfect, it was really hard and the bosses were irritating but as a whole it was probably the most intriguing of the Build engine games. Shadow warrior was a lot of fun but it was really uninspired towards the end.
Quake is probably still my favorite of the post-Doom wave. Of the less cinematic ones, F.E.A.R. comes close... dunno if that's a classic shooter yet.

I see talk of Blood here. This is good. Myself, I love the game. It had a profound effect on me as a kid when I first tried the shareware version back in '96. It legit spooked me for a good while due to some creepy whispering in the background in one level. But I kept coming back to it because it was drawing me in.
Then I grew to love the game and years later I managed to snag a retail copy off eBay. I didn't regret it. Only that with later incarnations of Windows I couldn't play it anymore... until GOG came around. Sometimes it still catches me off guard at times, like when I first stumbled on a Phantasm that shot out of a closet screaming at me when I opened it. That was surprising.
Been revisiting it lately and it's still as interesting to play as ever. Only mark I have against it is the AI at times. You can fire guns and blow stuff up and enemies won't care unless you enter their line of sight, and flying enemies are just all over the place unless they decide to hone in on you to attack. I still love the game though. I'd even take it over Doom.
Can't say the same for the sequel though. Blood II fell sort of short on the mark, I think.

This thread reminds me of the love-hate relationship I have with the first Hexen. On one hand is incredibly atmospheric, uses the Doom Engine in very creative ways and the hub structure was something novel at the time. On the other hand...those switch puzzles.
