www.hardcoregaming101.net/shantae/shantae.htmWayforward's series about a purple haired half-genie takes pages out of several classic action-platformers like Castlevania II: Simon's Quest and Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap.

Love the Shantae games. IIRC, Joakim Sandberg of Noitu Love (and hopefully soon The Iconoclasts) fame was one of the graphic artists for Risky's Revenge; the bipedal ship boss in particular definitely exhibits his trademark style.

I think I saw his name in the credits of Pirate's Curse too.

I believe Joakim Sandberg did some animation on Contra IV too. He's done a fair amount of freelance work for WayForward.
Nice to see the Shantae franchise get the HG101 treatment! It's a great series.

"(except for Game Informer, which infamously published an extremely biased review in one of its 2002 issues)."
Any link or quotes to the review?
Game Informer has always been funny to me. They have published several facepalm reviews. The one I remember the most is saying Turok 1 was better than Goldeneye.

About the small size of Risky's Revenge, I recall it was originally announced to be an episodic game, but then news sort of dried up. Eventually when they started talking about it again it was close to release and in the form it is now. Never really looked into reasons for the change, but I assume it was limitations with how DSiWare was handled and or budget/resource/staff constraints.

I've only played the second game and while it was fun at first, the amount of backtracking was unreal - especially in such a short game. the background/foreground system was confusing as well. kind of disappointing given how many good things I've heard about those games but then again, I haven't tried the other ones.

The DSi game is one of those games I bought, played for about an hour, and is now sitting in my backlog waiting to be finished someday.

I was never really wowed by these games, but it's nice that they managed to find their niche. I hate the art as much as I love the music, though.

In the pirate's curse article: is "and then switch make to Shantae" supposed to be "and then switch back to Shantae"?

The second game is the worst in the franchise, I feel. It is painfully obvious when you play it that it had some significant development issues (likely budget related), and despite still being fun the whole thing felt a bit cobbled together. I think the original game is a lot more enjoyable, but is still something of a flawed gem. The third game, though? Third time was the charm, because Pirate's Curse is an absolute masterpiece.

Electronic Gaming Monthly did not review Shantae at all, which seems pretty unfair, I wonder why?
Also, is Sigma Star Saga any good?

Sigma Star Saga isn't very good, sadly. It has its moments, but the procedurally generated shmup levels are painfully simplistic and dull, most of the customization options you can find are worthless, and the overworld has too many random encounters and is so zoomed in that navigation is a tremendous pain in the ass. It's a cool idea for a game, but ultimately it is not one of WayForward's better efforts, sadly.

It's good that the second and third game have also been released on PC, but I'm thinking of trying some GBC emulation to give a try to the first too - I recall hearing of it when it was recent and it was already considered an underrated swan song of the system that just came out too late, so it was a surprise to see the franchise resurrected many years later. I also didn't know WayForward's history went so back (eh) in time.
