I'll have to say, even for an arcade game, its one of the hardest games I ever played, possibly harder than Einhander. That an due to that, I have never beaten it, like ever.

It implies a lot about this game's difficulty that in NONE of the screen shots do you ever see the Default high score beaten.

Last Resort wasn't alone on modeling parts of itself after Akira. See also the first stages of Mad Stalker: Full Metal Force in its first three installments and maybe Pulseman.

It's actually been long rumored that irem (or at least some of their employees) worked on Last Resort. This would explain why it feels like a lost M92 arcade game at times.

Yeah, I always assumed that SOMEONE from Irem had to have worked on it, with those lovely graphics. Love the first stage theme, too, reminds me of SHIMIZM's next game, Art of Fighting.

It doesn't directly state it, but it's heavily (HEAVILY) implied that this is true in this little "making of" blurb from one of the original developers. game.snkplaymore.co.jp/official/neogeo_heroes/column/column02.htmlMore directly it states that the pixel artists went on to work on King of Fighters '94.

A little mistake from the beginning of the article: Re:mechanical enemies. There's another sign of human life in the game though, the cars at the very beginning of the first level, and you can blow them up as well. I like a lot the graphics in this game, but can't get past on how anti-climactic the bosses' destruction is. Screen goes black and that's it. The giant mecha boss reminds me of the equally giant mecha from the shitty Taito shmup Megablast reviewed here a while ago:

Something tells me there are more than just four video games ever made that reference one of the most recognizable sci-fi/action franchises ever created.
