Getting old can suck. I know how my parents were in with the music of their days but as time went on it became outdated with the next generations I assume. I didn't like most of the music cause it lacked a certain feel or sound that my days (the 80's and 90's) had mainly because of the sub-woofer I suspect. Well now we are at about there with our parents and I'm curious what today's generation thinks of 80's and 90's music.

I'd say their opinion doesn't matter since today's music blows.

I'd say their opinion doesn't matter since today's music blows. Eh, there's a couple of songs from the last several years that I like, but it's mostly stuff just out of the mainstream, I pay no attention to crap like Taylor Swift.

I will say with zero shame that I think Fallout Boy is one of the few highlights of this generation of music. But, it is going to be odd that my children will grow up listening to the stuff I grew up listening to the stuff my Dad listened to growing up. And he really likes the likes of Hank Williams and Buddy Holly and Johnny Cash as well as classic rock. So, he in turn listened to the stuff my Grandparents listened to. And what's even neater is that I'm really the only one in my family who likes long instrumental pieces in my Classic Rock. So I'll have a son who grows up listening to Yes and Jethro Tull. Bands who were old before his father was born, some of them having had their best stuff out before his grandfather was born. Isn't it fascinating how timeless music can be? And it really baffles me how I'll have so little from my own generation to share.
But, to answer your question, as I interact with a lot of teenagers in my gaming shop, as well as my little brother's friends, it depends. I mean nearly all of them are down with your famous stuff. And I mean the stuff that Cartoons and Movies just always use as shorthand. Other than that, and I don't know how to say this without sounding like an absolute ponce so begging your forgiveness, a lot of people just don't care about music. There are some people who just listen to whatever the radio plays all the time or whatever people listen to instead of the radio. And they live their lives like that. Christ knows if I understand why. Christ knows if I'd live that way. Finding some hidden gem on an album is my favorite thing in the world. I love finding a new catalog to dig through. But, there are people who just don't care. And it's not just this generation. I've had baby boomers just only talk about the famous shit from their day.

Fallout Boy is already passe though, along with all those other emo dudes, when I think "this generation" of music I think female artists like Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Adele, Nicki Minaj, Ariana Grande, Iggy Azalea, Rhianna and Beyonce. In fact that's part of what bothers me about modern music is it's almost completely female dominated nowadays, both in the artists themselves and the audience it's intended for, the only male artist that makes any waves these days is Kanye. And well frankly I miss "dude music", stuff like AC/DC, Van Halen, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Metallica, The Eagles, ELO, Cheap Trick, Pink Floyd ya know, classic rock, the last gasp for "dude music" was the nu metal era, which personally I don't think was that bad but most people completely despised it and that was that. Heck, I'll even settle for bands that had cross appeal like Duran Duran, Depeche Mode or Queen, but there's nothing like that today either, unless you count....One Direction, which I'd rather jam knitting needles in my ears than listen to.

I wasn't aware there was a single guy who listened to One Direction.
But I'd just settle for music that's interesting to listen to. And sounds like the band's having fun playing it. Even Pink Floyd sounds like they enjoy what they make. Even when they are being Captain Bringdown. Five Fingered Death Punch is just angsty bull shit for the sake of being angsty bull shit because angsty bullshit sells, and that makes me full of angsty bull shit. And really I'm just sick of angsty bull shit in music.
Also, today's music wouldn't know a good metaphor if one bit it in the ass like it was trying to stem the tide of angsty bull shit.

That's true, even a super bleak album like Animals is still very lively music.

Are you jamokes seriously suggesting vapid bubblegum nonsense are only a recent dominating force No, but there did used to be bands like Pink Floyd, bands that had huge mainstream success while also truly being art rather than just entertainment. I read an interesting article once that put forth the idea that basically what happened is the internet completely fucked over the music industry and it's never really recovered since and consequently any pretenses towards art has been sacrificed to commerce so the industry can stay afloat, basically if it's not something a teenage girl will listen to, which is the only audience that still buys music in significant numbers, then it's just not something that's going to get released by mainstream labels.

A little subtlety doesn't hurt either. Well I mean imagine if in Have a Cigar the line was "Which one of you is Pink Floyd? Because that could be a name guys. A weird name. So we're really curious which one of you gave your strange name to this band" weedly weedly wah

I would replace 'buying' with 'going to the concert'. That's where most of the money is made today. I wholeheartedly agree that the Internet has done a lot of damage. People have gotten used not to pay for music (although the industry has been so slow to react it's not free of guilt).
