WHen I was growing up I believed there never was such a thing as a bad video game. Heck, I didn't even know there was a video game crash in the early 80's. Blame it on a lack of information and Nintendo Power not mentioning stuff like this. It wasn't until I started in my teens that I read Electronic Gaming Monthly and a few other game mags that I learned this. So did anyone here have a similar experience in the past?

The first thing to really shatter my illusions that games could never suck: Road Runner in Death Valley Rally.

For me it was the NES X-Men. It hurt extra because Nightcrawler was my favorite X-Men character at the time.

Though it certainly wasn't the first game I played that I didn't like, one of the first games that did teach me that a game can just completely fucking blow was the terrible Reboot game on PS1, thank God I only rented it.

You know, I'm pretty positive about video games. Even more since I've been playing Tabletop stuff and thinking about design. And I just find myself thinking "This isn't my jam" or "Boy it's a pity that they programmed these controls, because I see what they were trying to do and this would've been awesome if that came across".
That said, I'm nearly positive Battletoads NES is a bad game.

Actually, it's as I've been growing older that I've become less of a snob. Only games I find truly offensive will garner my hatred now.
For the longest time I ignored the entire FPS genre. Now I'm basking in all its glory!

Not really. I mean, I was a bit of a Nintendo fangirl as a kid, so I sort of pooh-poohed all games on Sega systems. Not that I had actually played any back then, nor could I really name any by name. In terms of games for systems I owned back then, I was definitely less wary of bad games than now. I'd often pick up games after only looking at the front and back of the box. But I honestly didn't do too bad like that. I never bought myself anything horrendous, but there were definitely some I thought weren't that entertaining. The only game I straight up wouldn't play was Jurassic Park on SNES, which I got randomly as a gift. In retrospect, it's not even a bad game, and I beat it for the first time a couple years ago. But back then I just didn't enjoy playing it at all and couldn't manage to make any progress the few times I tried.

Mag Max on NES. I hated it, but played the hell out of it anyway due to a limited library and it being a Christmas gift. That was my first real disappointment in gaming.

The first thing to really shatter my illusions that games could never suck: Road Runner in Death Valley Rally. Wait, I remember that being pretty fun? Space Ace on the SNES and Dragon's Lair on the Game Boy did the trick for me. But I never had the illusion that video games were all great. But those were the ones, that even when somebody else had them, I'd rather just play the old games I was slowly getting sick off again than those.

Mad Max on NES. I hated it, but played the hell out of it anyway due to a limited library and it being a Christmas gift. That was my first real disappointment in gaming. Oh wait I totally forgot about Dragon Warrior and Indiana Jones on Atari. Both games I dug out of storage from my parent's things. Both looked sweet as hell on the label. And I worked forever to get both games to work and get met with the frankly terrible looking for 1999 Dragon Warrior and Indiana Jones that didn't work until I learned many years later about how that played with two joysticks.

I don't know what you'd expect an NES game to look like in 1999. Of course it's gonna look like an NES game. Unless that's a typo and you mean 1989, the year it came out in the US, when, yeah, it was looking pretty dated compared to other NES games coming out at the time, considering it came out on Famicom in '86.

I might be late on that but when I watched AVGN for the first time 6 years ago, I realized that games can be bad and I was 17 at the time.
