This is kind of sad. More people like the thing you like ...and this is a bad thing? You guys are really holding onto old grudges or putting too much of your identity in the things you like. Old jerks share a common interest with you and may not be jerks anymore, good for them. More people like what you like and you can help people learn more about the thing you enjoy so they enjoy it more, also good. I joke about anime newbies and all, but by no means do I hate any of them. They're just getting started and they may form their own tastes as time goes on. And that's good. Feeling like a medium should belong only to people you like or think are liking it the right way is gatekeeping BS. Just go play a game or listen to some metal if you're annoyed by the kiddies or newcomers. Actually enjoy the thing you enjoy instead of stressing over who likes it or not. Oh, there's plenty to love about the mainstreaming of nerd culture, don't get me wrong, it's just that at the same time there is something to be said for the era when you risked getting your ass beat for liking this stuff, I have a lot of respect for the older crowd of nerds who had to put up with that. One cool thing about modern mainstream nerd culture is all the hot girls who are into cosplay now, I love that stuff.

People don't like that their "common ground" or their "icebreaker" is being nullified by people much more charismatic than they are. Of course they're going to be annoyed. Feeling special because you like videogames is such an oxymoron. It's like feeling special because your favorite movie is different from popular opinion.

I've always thought that being a gamer was a lot like being a biker, in that it's not just a hobby, it's a way of life, man!
I'm only half joking.

I'm not sure "co-opted" is the right word. Nerd culture sprang entirely from the consumption of consumer products. These were originally targeted at niche audience, but once capitalism decided they could make a lot more money by courting the mainstream, that's what happened.
Big Bang Theory is still a garbage show, though.

come on, you forgot the best one edit: no you didn't, I'm just blind I don't think people posting in this thread are foaming at the mouth with anger, nor do I think people are trying to keep 'outsiders' from their hobby. But every time you (or rather, I) see someone IRL who says they're a gamer, or a nerd, they still kinda think less of you if you prefer old games, have a Wii U, or watch anime or whatever. They'll be praising up Pokémon and play some old ROM on an emulator on their smartphones, but when you mention you have the newest installment on 3DS, that's suddenly not cool. It doesn't make me enjoy my games any less, and it certainly doesn't bring my piss to a boil, but it would be nice for once that when somebody introduces themselves as a gamer, they know what a fucking NES is. pretty much this. I'd be happy to share my hobbies with people but the truth is that people still aren't interested in my hobbies. and while I'm not expecting everyone to play the same obscure roguelikes or grand startegy games I'm playing, it would be nice if those who are supposedly interested in games had a bit of knowledge of the medium - by which I don't mean encyclopedic stuff about personal lives of C64-era game designers, just a knowledge about the defining games from different genres and a decent grasp of some more general concepts

You guys are really holding onto old grudges or putting too much of your identity in the things you like. From what I've noticed, every third post from you seems to be about how you're a bisexual in Texas. Everyone has things that upset them more than others.

Well, honestly, every time JDarkside shows up in a thread, it's a one in five chance that it'll get locked. Better this one than most others.

In all fairness, I'm not trying to be a dick. Just trying to point out a small bit of hypocrisy.

In all fairness, I'm not trying to be a dick. Just trying to point out a small bit of hypocrisy. There's a difference between "I genuinely fear for my life because I'm queer in goddamn Texas" and "people like what I like now and that is bad."
