It's great to see Racing Lagoon having an article here but two things: -Sasaki wasn't director on Bahamut Lagoon, that was Kazushige Nojima (yes, the FFVII/VIII/X's scenario writer). -The article doesn't touch at all the game's main appeal, the reason why it still has a cult following in Japan even today: its unique and grandiloquent writing style, by none other than Motomu Toriyama, that, combined with the surreal 3D cutscenes, gives the game a very peculiar, involuntary (?) humorous tone. That's why its now classified as a Bakage ("silly game").

Ah, I think the author meant he was the designer of Bahamut Lagoon. Fixed that up.
I don't think the author (or much of our audience) is able to read Japanese enough to detect the quality of the script, but I added a credit for Toriyama, since he's well known enough for his, uh, eccentric scripts elsewhere.

inspired by the popular anime/manga series Initial D. I was about to say, "Didn't the anime come a number of years later?" But I guess the manga was out by then. EDIT: Huh, the anime was out in 1998. Guess the local anime club took a while to get their hands on it.

I'm willing to bet Racing Lagoon will not be near the top of the list of priorities on Square-Enix's list anytime soon.

I wonder with which game began the beginning of the end for Squaresoft (Final Fantasy movie notwithstanding). I think it's The Bouncer. Can't say anything much about this game since I didn't know anything about it...

So happy to finally have an article about this game. Despite its shortcomings (like the hit-detection), i love it and its one of my favorite games. Played through the game already two times because the RPG-racing-hybrid-gameplay just hooked me. Nothing better than leveling up your car on the highway and getting better items from your enemies. Although the author (and a lot of people) think the story is trash, i would love two find out whats it all about. (Can't speak/read japanse) Because the atmosphere of the game is just great, all this night driving in yokohama and the awesome OST which accompanys it. Besides the graphics weren't that bad, i think its looks on par with Gran Turismo. But did anybody else play this game, understood the story and can give me a small summary? As far as i know (and gathered around the internet) the main character was the best driver (yokohomas fastest legend?) in the 80s. Then he had crash? or went crazy and was frozen for ten years. Then he came back 1998 but coudn't remember anything and during the game he learns the truth. Or was the main character a clone of the 80s driver dude? And who was the guy in the "winter-land" with the disks? And who are all the guys in the "prison"?
P.s.: Here is my final car setup from my last Playtrough:

The Bouncer! I still have that game! I kinda liked it, even though the actual gameplay was pretty shoddy.
I attempted to play Racing Lagoon, but it just couldn't hold my interest. I was already too spoiled with Gran Turismo. But the cool thing is that Racing Lagoon references a lot of actual cars, parts, and companies.
Kakihara totally has a boss set-up, with an RB26DETT. And a Backyard Special developed kit???

Thanks Snake! No it just has an Aero-Diablo kit. It totaly changes every cars appearance and you lose a lot of kilos/pounds if you equip it. (The normal kits don't change your car really that much) The Backyard-SP (Lotus Europa) body unit makes the game much easier because it is so light and it looks nice. You should get it immediately as soon as you can race at Hakone. I used it on my first playthrough because i was so bad at cornering. I just pumped the engine full with good parts (more ps/hp), made sure that my car was very light (therefore the backyard-sp) and even i was a bad driver, i was so fast/light that i could still win the races altough i crashed into almost every corner. On my second playtrough i wanted to finish the game with a Souther (Lamborghini), but you don't get one until the last night. I leveled it up bit but after 70 hours playtime and a new RGB modded Nintendo 64 waiting to be turned on, i just finished it again with the Backyard-SP. I just recommend you to play the game again, because once you are hooked on the RPG-stuff you really can't quit and Racing Lagoon is really unique with this gameplay-mix. I would love to play a similiar game. (Yeah i played Final Lap Twin, it is not the same) Also the story-scenes have a nice feeling to them, even though i can't unterstand a word... P.s.: Here's an japanese walktrough, with nice charts for all the parts of the Game -> Klick
