Long story short, I replaced my motherboard, and installed Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit onto a new hard drive. I can generally do other stuff okay, like I downloaded the latest drivers for my graphics card so i can view everything at 1920x1080 resolution, which is cool. When I try to run Windows Update however, it'll just hang, showing the "checking for updates..." screen indefinitely. I've done some searching online, and several different people will give several different answers, none of which have worked for me so far. It's getting kind of annoying, because I'd like to just get my computer fully updated already. ugh.
Can anyone give some advice?

I was having this exact problem at the beginning of the month. I have no proof to back this up, but oddly enough, I was able to download updates as soon as I upgraded to Windows 10. My theory is that MS is blocking updates on fresh installs of Win 7 and 8 at this point.

Have you installed SP1 already? This new convenience rollup is also apparently quite useful. support.microsoft.com/en-ca/kb/3125574Apparently you can slipstream both of those into your Windows installation ISO, if you have it handy.

I've had situations where it my computer got stuck on "checking for updates" the whole time only to show "x updates ready to install" when I restart my computer. The update status notification doesn't change even though the operation still seems to be working behind the scenes. It was especially bad after being without internet for several months and have a large backlog of updates.

Service Pack 1 was already installed. I tried to do various workarounds to get it to go faster... but I must have messed something up, because then the computer stopped recognizing my hard drive. So, I had to reinstall Windows yet again, lol. This time, I decided to just let the computer sit overnight, so it could take as long as needed to get its shit sorted out. When I woke up this morning, I saw that the updates were ready; there were 35 important updates and 34 optional updates available, so I did all the mandatory ones and 1 optional, and it worked! Then I got all the other stuff sorted out, activated Windows, and transferred my important data from my old hard drive to my new hard drive. ....I think I'm finally done. I think I finally have a working computer again! Hooray One nice thing about this issue, is that the new motherboard I had to start using, had a much more powerful processor in it. I tend to get a lot of hand-me-down computer parts from my sister and her boyfriend, which is pretty normal, but this particular part was almost unused, and thus is relatively new. So, I have upgraded from my old AMD Phenom II X6 1100 T processor, to now having an AMD FX(tm)-8350 Eight-Core Processor! hooray My CPU speed went up from 3.3 GHz, to 4.0 GHz. I'm glad this all worked out, haha. Thank you everyone for your advice ^_^
