Glad this series is getting an article! Loved the first game when I played 10 years or so ago; I was quite disappointed to find out such a cool RPG seemed to have no fanbase at all. I remember posting about it on some RPG forum and the only response was someone complaining that the game "hurt his eyes"... It's nice that the article gets into the art and its designers, because it really features a pretty fascinating world. Was really looking forward to the second's fan translation-in the end I thought it was ruined by being so easy; if no boss ever poses a credible threat, all the battles become pointless. Which brings me to two points about the article.
1. The word "grindy". I used to think this meant that the game required level grinding to progress, but that can't be right; Lennus 2, as I mentioned, is super easy, and requires absolutely no level grinding at any point. The first game presents more of a challenge, but like most 16-bit RPGs, you can get away with very little level grinding if you play intelligently (ie use all resources at your disposal, only buy the most useful weapons, and if you think you must level grind, which you probably don't, go to the next dungeon, not the overworld, cause the monsters will probably give more exp). Yet writers seem to feel obligated to use the term here and forever when discussing pretty much any Japanese RPG older than 10 years or so. Does it actually mean something different? Are people just so afraid of dying that they level grind for no reason, then complain about it?
2. The author's complaints about these game being long really strike me as odd. As far as I remember, they're standard 90s turn-based RPGs-25 hours long, maybe 30... that's much shorter than your average PS1 RPG, and even more so than a PS2 RPG for example. It's infinitely shorter than most western-made computer RPGs.

I'm a big fan of Paladin's Quest / Lennus. In fact, my daughter's middle name is Midia! I love the art style, the unique magic system, and the story. Although it's rough around the edges, I think the game is criminally-underrated. A few years ago I e-mailed Hidenori Shibao and he told me a few interesting things about the series. The game was originally being developed for the Gameboy, but was switched to the SNES mid-development. And he described the novel as the origin story of the mercenary Mouth -- or perhaps there was another book? Admittedly, this is the most information I've come across about the novel in English, and I've had to rely on Google's sketchy translation tool to read Japanese content. Apparently there was an audio CD as well. Some of the CD's tracks were orchestral covers of the game's music, while other tracks were dialogue which told more backstory for the world of Lennus. I'm really appreciative of the fan-translation of Lennus II: Fuuin no Shito released by Magic Destiny. The sequel is not without its faults in my opinion, and it is not the sequel I would have written for the series, but it's an enjoyable game regardless. I'm a big fan of the collaborative works of Hiroyuki Katō and Keisuke Gotō as well, and own a few of their art books. I've been trying with no luck to get a hold of their multimedia CD-ROM, 夢帽子 Before and After Blue. There's more information about it here: fuki.sakura.ne.jp/~burabura/rom0.html If anyone has the CD-ROM available to sell to me, or an ISO rip available online, please don't hesitate to contact me! And if anyone is interested in putting together a fan-remake of Paladin's Quest / Lennus, drop me a line too I've got a good idea about how the story could be improved, and would be more than willing to write a script and put together some music. Cheers! PS: I forgot to mention, there is a debug room in the original Paladin's Quest / Lennus. Its entrance is hidden behind some foliage on the world map. You can't reach the entrance on foot alone, but instead must use the boat to get to a part of one of the islands you would never otherwise think to visit. I seem to recall the flying ship isn't able to land on any part of the world map that grants access to the debug room, but I may be mistaken about that.

I'd argue that 7th Saga isn't outright BAD, but it definitely isn't for everyone.

Great write-up! I just had time to read it all the way through. I didn't know about the Angel Fusion manga, either.
I've got some dev interviews with the Lennus team that I want to translate soon, should be some new info in there too.

I remember playing through the game on an emulator with a friend! Fritz's funky look was really striking, and we never realized Chenzi was a boy all the way to the end. Love the ending where you get to talk to everyone you met The writeup on Lennus 2 is great, too, although I feel exhausted just from hearing how much things you are collecting in the sequel. That sounds overboard.

The character names are so strange. I saw an LP of this on the LP archive.

Did the person that wrote the Lennus 2 article finish the game, does anyone know?
I'm looking for info about Eudenus and his marriage variations.
