Let's debate like gentle(wo)men.
Would contribute right now but am on phone with awkward controls.
Please don't be jerks to each other. I come to this site to relax, not fight.

When you have an online community I think it's simply more fun and more interesting to be able to debate things with people in a reasonable, respectful manner, while there's no law saying that a respective website has to allow certain views I'm simply not interested in an echo chamber where either you toe the line of what's deemed acceptable on said site (which obviously changes whether it's a left wing or right wing website) or get intimidated by insults and name calling.
And it seems like today websites that aren't echo chambers are becoming increasingly rarer and rarer, everything is so polarized nowadays that it's making the internet an increasingly unpleasant thing.

I'm okay with websites/forums with specific rules as long as they apply to everyone.

there's a difference between freedom of speech as a law and freedom of speech as a principle. for example, banning people from a message board generally doesn't violate the law but it can violate the principle. in general, I used to spend a lot of time on chans so I prefer hanging out in the more loosely moderated communities than on more regulated social media. this is also related to my views on privacy - I want to control what I share on the internet and I want an option to be anonymous or use a pseudonym (yes, I'm using my name here but I'm doing that voluntarily). of course everything I've just said is bullshit and I don't know why I'm telling you those lies. I've been found out in another thread: I'm acutally pro-murder and 'free speech' is just a ruse. now excuse me, I'm off to do some of my usual thursday afternoon nazi terrorism

What I find weird is that it often seems that the most angry/condesending comments on this forum and often in other places are usually replies to pretty tame things. What you mention above in the spoiler tag, Maciej Miszczyk, is a good example. Why did it have to escalate to that? It didn't. I get that people are often passionate about things they feel (I know I have often replied with quite big posts to people when I want to point something out), but sometimes you gotta ask yourself if the tone you're conveying is necessary. Usually things only escalate more if one person starts escalating. And those types of situations often become the kind of heated discussions where talks about free speech start. Just my experience. But again, I find this forum a very good place for discussions.

This forum has some issues it could stand to have worked out, but honestly, even at its worst, I think this place is one of the best communities I've been a part of. I just wish more people could refrain from escalating debates into name-calling and condescending remarks.

I'm not sure this thread needs to exist. It feels like it's just going to devolve into people yelling at each other.

You say, after the thread had died for over a week also, having this outside of the General Chat thread is good, so that there's less of a chance of the General Chat thread being locked for a third time. It's a containment thread!!! ^____________^

Was it that old? Guess you're right! Just saw it was marked unread and figured it was recent.

I only kill the sexually promiscuous and drug abusers, not free speech.

But what kind of free country would it be, if you had to put a ring on it, before you can stick your thing in it?
