Lots of good articles today, thanks guys! Only played The Knight of Lodis myself. Found it a bit too boring, honestly. The fights seemed to take forever and I was constantly losing track of the plot. And the final gauntlet of battles was the absolute worst, five long-ass battles with loads of unskippable dialogue and NO SAVING. Mind you, this was over ten years ago, might owe the game an another try. I enjoyed Knight of Lodis, which is also the only game I've played in the series, but I played it on an emulator with a speed-up fonction assigned to my controller, which I would press every time it was the CPU's turn, and most of the time when my units were moving, too. This is the only time I've done in all my gaming years, but the game really just moves too slowly. Well don't play the other games then. OB specially is remarkably slow.

It wasn't just the slow movement or the long animations, but also the fact that everyone (in KoL) has waaayyy too much health (and can be resurrected? I forget), meaning that you may have to hit an enemy scrub 8-10 times before they go down. All these things just made the fights way too long and frustrating.

I've never tried Knight of Lodis or OB64. Really need to get around to those.

OB64 is great though. It's the best one of the series for me.

One nitpick: "Zenobia no Ouji" doesn't translate to "Legend of the Zenobia Prince", just "[The] Prince of Zenobia".
The only English title that I've ever found in any official material is the "Let us walk on together, so as not lose our way" subtitle that appear at the bottom of the logo, so I have no idea where the "Legend of" part came from; my best bet is that someone used Babelfish or something to translate the title and the "Densetsu no" from "Densetsu no Ogre Battle" got misplaced. That or it is an awkward (and grammatically incorrect) attempt at translating "gaiden".
Regardless I can't find it used in any official sources and it seems to be just a common fan-(mis)translation of the title, so you should probably not use it in the article.

Ogre Battle's battles happen on a board though so they have less distance to move overall. With KoD you have to wait for the characters to climb stairs, turn, etc,. I still haven't played Tactics Ogre though.

When I was a kid I bought Ogre Battle for PS1, the only video game I ever brought back to the store because I didn't like it. I was so crestfallen the clerk accepted the return despite their store policy. God, it was sooooo slooow, the squads crawling like slugs on the map, the looong loooooading times... and you can't even control your units directly! The joke is on me, I guess, the disc must be worth a bunch of money now.
I finished the SNES version later on emulator. While I can see all the reasons why it's considered a classic, it's still as dry as a cardboard and drywall sandwich.

Have a friend who played Ogre Battle and was turned off from SRPgs for a while because of it. I should have specified. It was actually Ogre Battle 64.

This series really does sound like something special. I've always liked stories that try to keep things in the morally grey area and I also recall Matsuno writing the script to Vagrant Story which I enjoyed a lot. One of these days I'll have to install PPSSPP and give it a try.

I just tried the PSP Tactics Ogre and it seems significantly faster than the Snes version, so I'm thinking of playing it eventually. Was never interested in Ogre Battle.

The PSP version is sooooo much better than the original release of Tactics Ogre. It was nice to see that Valkyria Chronicles took a cue from the remake by having every unit in a given character class level up at the same time.

So, could I say that Final Fantasy Tactics is basically a watered down Tactics Ogre with a big name slapped on it? I mean if you want me to deck you in the head sure.

Interesting articles.(never knew of the whole Serbian reference thing) One quibble: You can fight and then move in the original Tactics Ogre.
As for the comparisons of the PSP version to the original, I've got some beefs. I don't think the new translation is as good as the original. I feel like the dialog trips over itself and reads awkwardly. I mostly prefer the more plain spoken dialog.
Plotwise, some things were changed for the worse like making Leonard as a racist in the new version.
The gameplay has been dramatically changed for the worse. It is way too easy to just dig into a giant collection of healing herbs. The original basically restricted each character to 1-2 realistically. (You can carry 4 if you want to lose all armor and weapons)
Even the maps have been changed greatly. There's a level where you fight Dark Knight Lans in the original that was quite devious because every enemy had warp boots for example. In the update its traded for some plain old Knights of Lodis getting clustered in a narrow area, making them easy to kill.
While playing through the PSP version I decided to fire up the old PS1 version I had and played a random battle and found it surprisingly more interesting.(was this just a novelty I'm not sure)
I think the super moves all characters have in the PSP version ruins the old school balance of the original. You can easily get punished for beating up on opponents, making you have to resort to being very careful to eliminate an enemy immediately. It also made it too easy for players to use super moves to get through levels. It's like because they put those moves in, they had to lose permadeath because it's too frustrating to have units die from supers. I know there were a few you could get in the original but it wasn't available to nearly every character.
I know people complain about training but I don't think it's that bad in this game with the exception of the level jump in Ch. 2. I don't remember it taking a whole lot of training/random battles in the other 2 chapters. Besides training, persuading people to join your army is an alternative, enabling you to let people die and not having to grind from level one. If you persuade someone in the new Tactics Ogre, you have to hope your convert is using a pre leveled class. You could fight them as a level 20 Ninja, persuade them and then he can only fight as a level 3 ninja in your army because that's all you leveled up. Just doesn't make sense.
PSP requiring grinds of every class which was plain stupid. It really discouraged trying new classes. The loot system is stupidly random now. In the original you almost always seemed to win special weapons in battles. Since loot drops are super random in the psp version, you often don't get anything good on killed enemies. Instead you have to tediously persuade them if they have an item you want.
Load times sucked in the PS1 version so if you can get another version with frameskipping I seriously recommend checking out the original. The PSP version is not superior in every way.
