www.hardcoregaming101.net/rhythmthief/rhythmthief.htmSega has a number of classic music-themed games, but this stylish launch window 3DS game, which meshes rhythm mini-games with adventure segments and an exciting story set in Paris, sadly seems to get lost in the mix.

I figure more people got the game during that Humble Bundle than the physical cart upon release. Story-based rhythm titles are pretty few and far between. Sega's current arcade rhythm game is jokingly called the washing machine. At least it has classic tunes like from Jet Set Radio.

I got about halfway through this game and would like to go back and finish it sometime, but it exacerbates some of Layton's biggest flaws. In particular, Layton obliged you to vigorously massage every square millimeter of the touch screen at every location to find picarats (which were sometimes behind obvious windows or stones or other features, but just as often were sitting in any old random location). Here, it's not just currency, but significant, unique collectables, and they're missable, and you have to go back and check the old locations after every dang chapter too. Ugh.

That's not their only current arcade rhythm game, though -- they're also responsible for Chunithm, which is absolutely fantastic. As well as Project Diva Arcade, of course. -Tom

I will say that it is true that the plot points of Rhythm Thief tend to drag a bit longer than needed to get to the next rhythm segment at times, particularly whenever you need to move through the map to the next destination and the next point can be like several stops down with some halts in most screen changes.
