Just curious if you guys would be up for sharing some of your favorite solos, guitar or otherwise. I know I can always appreciate them, so I'm wondering what you guys can recommend. Here are some of my favorites:
Focus - Second guitar splo from 'Answer? Questions! Questions? Answers!' from the live album At The Rainbow (solo starts at ~10:30):
Great solo from Jan Akkerman, and also some great solos preceding it. Probably the only (long) guitar solo that I know from the top of my head.
Ian Underwood's solo - The Old Curiosity Shoppe:
Probably my favorite non-guitar solo at the moment. From a live peformance of Billy the Mountain from the Zappa album Finer Moments.
Of course I have to include something from Zappa himself:
The title track from the first Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar. One of various awesome solos from '79 versions of Inca Roads. Even better because of the drumming by Vinnie Colaiuta.

I'm pretty sure it's not a solo effort, but it's been one of my favorites for a good chunk of time,so enjoy, if you're even remotely into these kind of sounds !

Floods - Pantera. This album came out at just the right time and led to lots of good things in my life. And this an absolute favorite mine.
Tornado of Souls - Megadeth. Really hard to pick a favorite Marty Friedman solo, but this one always sticks to me.
Tommy the Cat - Primus. Bass solos count? Because this one rules.

Any kind of solo is fine. And that Tornado of Souls solo is great, yeah. Reminds me I should pick up some Megadeths CDs some time.

I highly recommend the new record. Kiko is a beast. The best lead player they've had since Marty.
This video has a few solos, but Steve's around the 2:30 mark is just too good.

Well, I will have to get their 80's output first though, I don't own a single Megadeth CD.

In that case the essentials from that era are Peace Sells...But Who's Buying? and Rust in Peace. Killing is My Business and So Far, So Good, So What are good, but those first two are where to start.

Actually, I'm a bit familiar with their early albums through my downloading days. I've since switched to only music I legally own, and I just haven't had the chance to get everything I listened to on CD or LP yet. I'll probably end up picking up Peace Sells and So Far So Good first. The former is probably the only album where Mustaine's vocals don't get on my nerves too much.

Good choice on Tornado Of Souls. The one from She-Wolf is also brilliant. Sounds super video game-y, too.
There's also always Europe's "Superstitious". The lead playing on the whole album is great (the bluesy licks in Never Say Die are also brilliant), but that's the best solo by far.
There's a couple of solos from punk rock songs that really stood out to me when that was my introduction to heavier guitar stuff. They're not technical at all, but they are sweet and melodic. Million Miles Away by The Offspring is the first that comes to mind, but also Strange Denial by Bad Religion (Digital Boy, too, but Strange Denial is definitely the more melodic one) and Pharmacist's Daughter by NOFX.
Also really like some of the guitar stuff Sambora did with Bon Jovi; I'd Die For You and Born To Be My Baby especially.
But you know, I get less impressive as I get older, because most of the stuff on this list, I first heard before I could play guitar at all. That was like wizardry. Pretty sure that if I heard stuff like Move Slow by Saosin when I was younger, it'd be on the list as a biographical milestone. As it is, it's just a damn fine solo.
One I heard later that still stands as one of the absolute best I ever heard would be Almost Home by Evergreen Terrace, though. That one's just a perfect solo.
