Threed always creeped me out. I loaded up a save file on the rental copy of EarthBound I got when I was ten and wandered in front of the Boogie Tent by accident and it scared the crap out of me. I really love the atmosphere of zombie-Threed. It's one of my favorite places in a video game. The colors and music are great - I really like how the music for the shops changes as well. The NPCs all being on edge is a neat touch too.

The nightmare version of Brookhaven hospital in Silent Hill 3 is one of the most intense environments in horror gaming history. Is it not essentially identical to the hospital in Silent Hill 2? The non-nightmare version of Brookhaven is very similar to 2's, however the nightmare versions are completely different, 3's is inspired by the nightmare version of Alchemilla in 1 and is more in your face hellish, 2's nightmare version is a little more subtle. My theory why is you only get the in your face blood, rust and chains nightmare when Alessa and her power is involved, James being just your average Joe his nightmare is scary, but not quite as over the top

In particular finding the save points/diary entries of Harry. (Although it never seemed like he had a clue of what was going on in part 1!)

There were some scary places I've seen in games, I don't remember them all but there are three notable examples. What's funny, all of them are from Hideo Kojima's games. Kinda shame Silent Hills got cancelled, it could be helluva scary with him as the director.
1. Several places from Snatcher like Queen's Hospital and the hallway under the church.
2. Space museum at night in Policenauts.
3. Arsenal Gear of Metal Gear Solid 2.

Once again, at the risk of repeating myself, a lot "horror sections" in non-horror games can apply. For a specific example, I would pick the Children of Tarrone Tenement in SWAT 4.

Alessa was basically tormented to near death in order to act as a conduit for the cult's "god" and was kept alive in a run-down room in the hospital basement. Silent Hill's dark side takes its form based on the psyche of the person who is currently causing it to manifest, so for Alessa, who views her time locked away in that grimy hospital room as the ultimate suffering, Silent Hill appears as a hellscape of rust, blood, and metal. Since Alessa's psyche is responsible for the manifestation of Silent Hill's dark side in both the first and third games, they share a lot of very similar visual themes! Silent Hill 2's "hero" hasn't endured the same kind of physical suffering Alessa did, his damage is entirely mental, so his version of Silent Hill's dark side is a lot subtler.

And here I thought the reason Silent Hill was scary was because it was also the same backdrop for Kindergarten Cop, The Goonies, and Short Circuit.
First scariest game place that comes to mind? Splatterhouse. Specifically the room where you find your girlfriend. And her clothes rip, her skull splits, and starts attacking you as a monster with retractable claws. Almost as frightening as the all the drama I went through with my ex. Almost.

I still remember I always tried to force myself through zombie apocalypse stage of Metal Slug 3. The optional Yeti cave in particular was pretty hardcore, especially when you're on your way back, only to find out those zombies surrounded you good. Really spooky.
The music is constantly good, though. Liked that lead guitar.

Threed is a great example. That place is the first time that Earthbound gets really weird and shows some of its darker side. I however think that the last area in Earthbound is downright terrifying, and its meant to be that way. FIrst of all you aren't even in human form anymore, you're in robot form which is already unsettling. But the entire atmosphere there is really unsettling. The enemies are incredibly strong as well, which makes it even more unsettling. But the first time you fight Giygas it is literally a wtf moment the entire fight. Everything Pokey says, the way that "you can't even grasp tha nature" of Giygas attacking. You try literally everything on him (it?) and nothing seems to hurt him. I was like 11 years old and trying to figure something, anything out. I used literally everything in my arsenal against him. I thought I was prepared. Then it happened. I was low on health and pp, needed to try to stay alive. And I used the Pray command, which was useless the entire game. Low and behold somehow, it worked. I was blown away. That was one of my favorite moments in gaming period. They set it up so that it would happen that way. I got the full effect and I'm so glad I didn't have it spoiled for me. The entire experience was just mindblowing and is one of the reasons Earthbound is and always will be one of my favorite games of all time.
I brought it up on facebook and some younger people were bashing it saying "it's shit" and it's "over rated". I could not believe what I was reading. Surely these people haven't played the entire game. The Giygas experience is something that any true gamer could surely appreciate. Just no, that game is a masterpiece. Kids these days. Yeesh.
Back on topic though, I know we are only supposed to pick one, but I have to mention another couple of creepy moments/places if just for the sake of conversation.
In FInal Fnatasy 6 Zozo really creeped me out. The entire place has a really slummy vibe to it, like its not a place you would want to be at all. The music is super creepy. Everything is irty and delapitated. Everyone is a liar and gives you false information, and the enemies are humans and not monsters. The place has a very malicious vibe to it and as a kid I just wanted to get the hell out of there. As an adult I've really grown to appreciate the way its put together. Another of my all time favorite games. ANd you get the chainsaw so ya know if you can solve the clock riddle, so that's pretty cool too.
There are a few places in WoW that are super creppy. The entire area of duskwood comes to mind. Its just a haunted forest basically with some towns here and there, but the mood is very well done and the stories told are pretty damn creepy. I don't really remember any specifics other than a zombie cave and a lot of fog, but it was very effective.
There was also the whole Mankrik's wife thing on the horde side of wow. You are searching for this guy's wife for some reason and in the end you just find a body and it was very wtf. People still ask in chat to this day where Mankrik's wife is, its basically a WoW meme.
Good convo. Got me thinking.

The nightmare version of Brookhaven hospital in Silent Hill 3 is one of the most intense environments in horror gaming history. I agree. It may be the scariest place in a game full of scares. Two reasons why in particular: That damned room with the mirror and that damned room with the bleeding bathtub. For some reason, I don't think I experienced the former scare until I replayed the game on Hard. That made it even scarier.

If anyone played Fable II, I’d like to know if I’m the only one who actually found parts of that game surprisingly unsettling? Wraithmarsh is the obvious example, I hate going through there. And oh... that ”cozy” winter lodge? Remember that? F*** that place, gave me an anxiety attack.
There are a lot of environments in the game that makes me feel super uneasy, more so than I suppose the intention was. Even outside the obvious crypts, caves and dark woods. The more I think about it, the creepier Fable II seem. Not that you can actually die or anything, but the atmosphere was pretty thick most of the time.

The mirror room scared me so bad the first I was literally shaking afterward and had to take a break, it's not had quite that effect on me again but the first time, when you have no idea what the fuck is happening, is some scary shit And there's also stuff like the walls made of crawling flesh, nightmare Brookhaven in 3 is the most blatantly hellish Silent Hill ever got, the nightmare Brookhaven in 2 by contrast is also scary as hell, but in a more subtle Jacob's Ladder way.

Yup, Fable II has some effectively creepy areas and moments. There's also the caves with Hobbes, that eat people and are littered with bones and bodies in bloody burlap sacks.
