I was SO frickin' hyped for the original open world version of Alan Wake, the idea of an open world horror game in a Twin Peaks esque town sounded like such a genius idea, I couldn't wait to explore it.
Then of course the game went linear, I wonder how much of that had to do with whether an open world approach is really viable or not to a horror game or the technical limitations of the Xbox 360, remember Alan Wake's lead platform was originally the PC and it was going to push all sorts of advanced new physics and lighting tech which the 360 probably couldn't handle and since Microsoft demanded the game be on 360 as well the rest is history, in fact the PC version was originally canceled before the 360 version was then reverse engineered for a PC port.
I'm thinking it probably had more to do with technical limitations, which is too bad, I'll always wonder what the original version would have been like, but Remedy made the best of a bad situation and gave us a game that is still pretty great, I love Alan Wake's blend of Stephen King, Twin Peaks and The Twilight Zone and it's overall a great story and Alan Wake, much like Max Payne before him, is just a really interesting character who you enjoy playing as and following their story.
It's too bad Alan Wake couldn't have been the big franchise they clearly wanted it to be, American Nightmare was originally conceived as Alan Wake 2, but wound up scaled down to DLC, it's better than nothing though and gives the storyline somewhat of a sense of closure, but hopefully Microsoft will change their mind and allow Remedy to make a full fledged sequel.

Man, I really loved Alan Wake, personally. It felt like a Stephen King movie.
Which is to say kind of corny but still pretty enjoyable.

I hated this game so damn much. My hype went from ten to zero in a very slow burn as I realized how displeased I was with it.

It might have helped that I managed to miss the hype train almost completely. I went in with very little expectation.

It might have helped that I managed to miss the hype train almost completely. I went in with very little expectation. Like I said I was very hyped at first, but the game took so long to come out, 5 years in fact, that by the time it did my hype had dissipated and I accepted the game at face value rather than having sky high expectations. I wasn't even totally sure the open world stuff was totally gone when I first played it, when it became clear it was I just kinda shrugged my shoulders and got over it, it's still a good game for what it is.

Actually, the game is still technically open world, only your progression is being strictly gated. You'll notice it in particular when the game drops you off suspicious, ankle-high ledges that prevent you from backtracking, or puts random obstacles on an otherwise uninterrupted road to force you to exit your vehicle and move elsewhere on foot. But the game world is still cut from the same single piece that was initially supposed to be freely explorable, which is made evident i.a. in the crazy camera zoom-outs that you can occasionally trigger.

Like...did we play the same game? Man, I do not know. A lot of people really like this game but I found it just miserable and so did the people I was playing it with. If I had an Xbox anymore I would probably give it another try.
