Visual Novels? I usually read a book or watch a movie, sorry , but i like the art in some of them I never really get these reactions, to be honest. I have a degree in English lit and I still read "trashy" stuff like VNs. If you're down with the art, which is the most common turn off, I'd say you should give them a shot! I tried a few, but i don't get the genre honestly, most Japanese developers insist how the gameplay is at utmost importance in video games for them and yet Visual Novels and Dating Sims flourishes there. Personally, it just doesn't grab me, i don't find it appealing. There are crappy books and movies, but i can't see anything in these type of games other than being 'soapy', most of the time. I mean, i like games where it feels like you play it, not press buttons to flip pages. Even worse, if i had someone to share my life with, i likely wouldn't even think about VN. Most couples i know, give me confusing face expressions when i mention them

Does this VN get gorey or anything? Or just really surreal and spooky? I tend to have pretty bad reactions to certain sorts of gore. I can handle RE4 but Hotline Miami made me feel ill and I can't play it. I'm fine with the Corpse Party games and VNs though, if that's a useful reference point. Visual Novels? There's one scene which is pretty bloody, but for the most part i wouldn't describe this as a gory game. It's more about being really unnerving and uncomfortable than about showing the player a bunch of gross stuff.

Just beat this now. I know I'm late to the party, but this is probably the best game I've played in 2017, and one of the best horror games made period. For anyone with even the slightest affinity for the genre, this is a must play.
Just make sure to go in completely blind for maximum effect.

I'm glad you liked it ^_^ And yeah, I'm thinking this is my favorite game of 2017 as well. It's seriously so good. It's the kind of game where, weeks after finishing it, I still find myself thinking about its story and characters. It'll probably stick with me for a long time coming.

It's a good game, but honestly I think it leans too hard into the tropes(which I know is deliberate). The brief moments of ACTUAL WRITING are brilliant, such as the depression explanation and the ending.

yuri.dance/Don't click this if you haven't beaten the game. Or... if you get scared easily.

I finally got around to playing this again and went for the so-called "fulfilling ending", which you can obtain by... ...unlocking all 9 CGs in the first part (loading a save before that one certain scene). That is, two per girl following their routes (writing the poems to appeal to them), two more for spending the weekend with Natsuki or Yuri, and Sayori's special CG. More spoilers ahead... This time I noticed just how much Monika foreshadows, down to Sayori's suicide and Yuri's behaviour. And the girls' behaviours and quirks manifest themselves, if slightly, even in the first part, which I hadn't realized at first.
Also when Monika speaks with Sayori when she's feeling down, I wonder what she said? Because later Sayori says something like "Monika was right, I should just...". I must have forgotten that the first time, huh...
Personally I really enjoyed Natsuki's route. As I mentioned, in my previous playthrough I naturally went for Yuri, but I actually chose to spend the weekend with Natsuki, which had a pretty cute moment. So I was left wanting more, heh. I didn't know that thing about her dad... well, I had read some comments here and there, but I didn't know exactly what was up with her. She was the sanest of the bunch by the end, hehe. I wish we could have learned more of her. And man, too bad Yuri refused to share poems with you because she felt she had insulted you. She's just the kind of girl to overthink that!
Sayori's words by the end were very comforting. At first I thought that the game would punish you for being a completionist (like Undertale did, it kinda shoved it to your face if you went the kill 'em all route), but it was a very, um, well, yeah, fulfilling moment. Monika didn't get her happy ending... But, I can say I'm now satisfied with the game.
This game is something else, isn't it. -- That Honest Trailer, I've read about some of the secrets -- just how true can it be that DDLC is also a marketing campaign for another game? It was a damn good one, I must say, and, intentional or not, Team Salvato is getting a lot of hype for whatever they're making next! I really enjoyed this video by Souls YouTuber indeimaus (he has since branched off to several games) -- don't be put off by the "waifus" in the title; like he says, it's just an excuse to discuss the game. Great editing as well, worth a watch just for that (SPOILERS AHEAD): Speaking of which: It's pretty cool that DDLC has inspired so many people to make their videos in the spirit of the game. edit: It's a good game, but honestly I think it leans too hard into the tropes(which I know is deliberate). The brief moments of ACTUAL WRITING are brilliant, such as the depression explanation and the ending. The depression explanation was very, very well done, I agree. Also did Jason X play this yet or what? Heh.

Haha, those videos are cute I'm also happy to see that the game has really taken off; I think it totally deserves the attention it has earned. And hmm, that's a good question... @jasonx Have you played Doki Doki Literature Club yet? ?? lel

After Zero Punctuation posted a review, I decided I had to give the game a whirl if I wanted to listen to Yahtzee's latest rant.
I agree pretty much with what everyone's saying: it's an amusing little diversion that barely qualifies as a game, the depiction of depression is surprisingly poignant, the price of free is entirely fair, and the designers have done a magnificent job of marketing their next game.
I read about the secrets in the .chr files. The short story was kind of nifty.
Reading some of the above, I realize that I did not go for the completionist route, nor am I particularly inclined to do so, as that first chapter is just so flipping boring. Could someone possibly direct me to an appropriate Youtube video?
(After a moment of Googling, I gather Buffsuki doesn't show up.)

In this ending, the only thing that changes is that last part. It was a huge payoff after playing the rest of the game again!
N-no, Buffsuki doesn't show up, haha! It's a really well made edit, isn't it

I still have no idea how Buffsuki even came to be a thing. Who made it, and why?

Neat, thank you. I'm still burned from that time I tried unguided to do a genocide run of Undertale, but wasn't nearly thorough enough. I still plan to do that again sometime. (I should perhaps emphasize that after finishing the game once, I did replay the first chapter just because I wanted to see the context for the CGs in the credits – but of course, it only counts if you do it right. Bleck.) This video of alternative manipulations turned up as well. Not too much of interest, but interesting nonetheless. www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNCkrgmUDxk
