www.hardcoregaming101.net/metroid/Metroid: Samus Returns came out a few months ago, and I thought it would be a good time to revisit the series and write some stuff about it. This batch includes the original trilogy...over the course of the rest of the week, I'll be posting reviews of Metroid Fusion and Metroid: Zero Mission, and then AM2R and Metroid: Samus Returns, along with how both compare to Metroid II.

The version of the "Just in Bailey" urban legend I've heard is that it was the name of a brand of swimsuit, not an Australian nickname for one.

Will you be covering all of Metroid or just the 2D parts of it?

Will you be covering all of Metroid or just the 2D parts of it? Just the 2D ones for now. Main reason: they're on portable platforms and I actually have time to (re)play them. I played Prime 1 and 2 when they came out, along with a bit of 3, but barely touched Other M. I've gotten the Prime Trilogy up and working with Dolphin so those will definitely be covered eventually...but not in this round.

For Super Metroid I really wish they had kept the open endedness of the first game instead of shifting the focusing more towards items and weapons.

Metroid's evolution has been based on the original game being a very mid-80s adventure game in its obtusity, and then Nintendo trying to rework its structure to have broader appeal as the years went on and their attitude towards design changed. I think that's the better approach, though it would've been nice if not everything was mandatory in the newer games.
Playing Metroid Prime again, I'm noticing that the level design doesn't adhere to the guided nature of Super. Like, if this were Super Metroid, it probably wouldn't let you back onto the Tallon Overworld after you entered the Chozo Ruins, until you'd gotten the Boost Ball, since that's the first time that really need to go back. But this one not only lets you, but gives you an alternate elevator back to it even though there's no reason to use it at first. To contrast, it guides the player using the "hints" that pop up on the map if you wander around for a bit. It's less organic, and not as "smart", but there's something to be appreciated by the more open-ended nature too.

From what I remember of Prime, at least the first, even though it tells you where to get eventually the actual process isn't perfectly straight forward. I think you can even get to certain points multiple ways if I remember right. That's what bothered me so much about Fusion and more so Zero Mission. Though to Fusions credit you did have to improvise paths at least a couple times though admittedly its been a long time since I played either.
I liked the way Samus Returns handles it. You can take the hints if you want them but otherwise it'll let you find things yourself.

1st page:
"Also present are shelled creatures that fly back and forth, which are invisible to most attacks;"
I believe it should say Invincible?
"There are a few areas where you can fall in lava and it’s basically impossible to get it"
To get out.
"The clue is that this is easier than the real ons,"
Real ones.
3rd page:
"You can combine theIce beam"
The Ice
"both subtly leading you in the correction direction"
Correct
Kurt, were you tired?

Two sidebars is at least one too many for me.
"it differed to two major ways"
I think it should be "in two major ways" here.

The Correction Direction sounds like a 70’s backing band!

Other M was decent (not great) as far as gameplay mechanics but god damn it was so dull.

A clarification: the viruses in Fusion are simply called "X," "X Parasite" or "X Virus." The "SA-X" is specifically the Samus clone(s).
