Gunstar Heroes (Switch) Gunstar Heroes is the greatest action game of all time. It doesn't matter that the homing laser is broken because this is all about the explosions and tossing enemies at each other. Personally, my favorite weapon is the "lightsaber" (lightning+flame). The 3D Classics version is the best one since it lets you swap between fixed and free firing modes, but the original is fine too.
HLTB lists this as 2h which seems too long.

Shovel Knight (Switch, part of "Treasure Trove" collection) - short, sweet, well-designed, properly retroish, and with fantastic soundtrack - basically everything I could ever want from an indie platformer

Finished the first scenario of the old-styled metroidvania Creepy Castle on Steam, which unlocks the others (there are like 5). Does it count as a finished game or do I have to complete them all?

Does it count as a finished game or do I have to complete them all? 🧀Son of Suzy Creamcheese🧀 can correct me, but that sounds similar to episodes of a classic shareware game where the entire game is one purchase (e.g. Doom, Tyrian), though split up into episodes as you play it. As such, it would need you to finish the other scenarios. In other news, I finished Pyre (PC; 2017), and I'm glad I did. At one point I almost rage quit over a frustrating match, but I decided to just accept the result and move on. For the record, the characters freed in my game were: Hedwyn, Jodariel, Rukey, Fae, Ti'zo, Tamitha and myself, the Reader. The match against Tamitha is the one I mentioned accepting the results of, above. Pamitha would have been my last freed character, but Oralech won the final match, and that ended up resulting in the reader going free instead.

Had a bit of kid free time so got out the SMS and tried a few new (to me) and a few favourites-
Mercs (SMS) One of those games I have no experience with the arcade version, but this sucks. I dunno how this is a 4mbit cart either, the graphics are pitiful, sound is almost non existant. The initial gun feels awful to use, its graphical representation when shooting feels glitchy. Get the flame thrower and stick with it. Thankfully the game is beaten in less than 15 minutes, as you are given a timer that is pretty strict and you basically have to run through the levels. If you play an overhead shooter on the SMS try Secret Command or Time Soldiers or The Ninja or not this.
Predator 2 (SMS) Typical quickly put together licensed game. Run left to right shooting enemies, picking up new weapons and touching hostages to rescue them. The predator occasionally comes at you in the form of 3 red lights, can kill you or go for hostages. This game was 7 levels so over quite quickly but even then it felt like it dragged on as you have seen basically all the game offers in the first minute of play. Didn't look too bad for a SMS game though!
Alex Kidd in Shinobi World I used to play this back in the day and it's a pretty good mish mash of the first Shinobi game with Alex Kidd. From memory (I haven't played Shinobi for 15 years) I think all the levels, enemies and bosses are based of Shinobi, but it's been made 'cute' with Alex Kidd. The power you get when holding onto horizontal and vertical beams is pretty cool, turning Alex into a fireball and destroying everything in his path. This game is pretty short, but fun to run through and probably wouldn't cause anyone who plays games a bit to have any trouble. Kinda sad this the second best Alex Kidd game, and still a pretty big drop in quality from Miracle World.
Golden Axe Warrior(SMS) Another one I used to play a lot as a child. Been so long that it was like playing for the first time again, which was great as it let me find all of the games secrets again. I love the axe and the chunky sound it makes when chopping down trees, makes hunting all the secret areas down all the more satisfying. I've seen some odd complaints about this game over the years, that the controls are bad but I had no complaints the character controls fine and is responsive, going into the menu is almost instantaneous so swapping items is never a hindrance. One odd complaint was that the sword doesn't come from the centre of the character when thrusting, it is always thrusted from the player characters right hand, seems like a non-issue to me. All in all anyone who still enjoys the first Zelda would be good to play this as it is basically that with better direction for the player. If only it had the 2nd quest!
Shadow of the Beast(SMS) I wish this game had more forgiving/better gameplay as the graphics and music are fantastic. They create this otherwordly/eerie feeling of a world you just want to explore more of. The game just makes it so difficult to see more of it. 1 mistake will leave the game unable to be beaten, and in most instances the game will in no way let you know you have screwed yourself. I loved this game as a kid because stuff like that didn't matter. Now I somewhat value my time and repeating the same areas can get boring quickly.

From the impression I'm getting of the game, it'd be completing all scenarios that counts as beating the game. It seems most comparable to something like Kirby Super Star.

Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment (Switch, part of "Treasure Trove" collection) - I think on some level I enjoyed it even more than original game; level design is top notch, and it's a lot of fun doing diagonal slashes and flying through the whole map instead of relying on Duck Tales-esque shovel thing. Also, Missy is the best girl .w. Final time is 3:46:04 - I'm pretty good!

Spider-Man (PS4)
Whew, I just barely managed to finally finish that and squeeze it in just before the end of the year.
And with that ladies and gentlemen, 2018 is concluded for me, here's to 2019!

Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows (Switch, part of "Treasure Trove" collection) - initially my least favorite entry in the trilogy, but ended up being the one I enjoyed the most - plot is kinda adorable, Plague Knight himself is one absolute madlad of a protagonist, and navigating levels is one heck of a fun due to the fact that you can fly all over the area and completely break the level design by comboing double jumps and bomb bursts. Finished in 4:23:11; will probably be my last entry for the challenge. Thanks for the challenge! That was one enjoyable year <3

Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom (PS4)
Put around 45 hours into this one. Collected all the citizens and maxed out the Kingdom level. While light on character development the story is charming in a fairy tale sort of way. Would probably make a good starter RPG. NNKII maintains a nice rhythm of doing side-quests, unlocking upgrades, recruiting citizens, and playing the main story. I actually completed the majority of the content other than the giant randomized optional dungeon.
The battle system is the weakest aspect of the game. Plays like a Star Ocean-lite. Party members feel kinda useless (there are no settings for altering their behavior) and on normal difficulty most battles don't call for much strategy outside of avoiding the fire. There are a hundred little creatable/recruitable minions (Higgledies) that come with special abilities effecting battle, but I never felt they were all that useful or worth comparing the differences in. Perhaps on a higher difficulty they matter more.
Still I had a lot of fun playing Ni no Kuni II. Recruiting characters was fun and seeing Evan's Kingdom grow from nothing is a neat journey. I didn't care much for the first game but if they make a third this time I will pick it up on release.

428: Shibuya Scramble (PS4) - 43 hours, 3 minutes
Managed to finally finish this right before the year ended. What a game to go out with. I don't play many visual novels but I was really taken back by how substantial this was length/content wise. This playtime was a bit padded out due to trial and error (some endings were really obscure to get) and the lack of text skip but even still it was a lot. Really loved the cast of this (even the characters I didn't like at first, I mostly came around to) and am already experiencing a bit of sadness that the game is over. Would definitely love to see more like this.

Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom (Switch) I put this as a High in the recap thread, but I originally had this as an Average and bumped it up for an even 30/20/10 split. I kinda wish I had kept it there. This is good overall, but there are some problems.
My main issue is that some parts are just boring/tedious e.g. most of the Volcano area. I think you can mainly attribute this to a developer that hasn't worked on this genre and a project of this scale in the past; Game Atelier mainly worked on arcade style mobile games. Cutting down some of the areas would have helped.
This is also a somewhat buggy game. The most major issues seem to have been fixed—apparently it was literally impossible to finish the Switch version or get a 100% on release—but I still experienced some crashes. Some of the equipment effects don't seem to work quite right either.
On the plus side, the animation and music are great as is the core gameplay. The different transformations are put to good use, and I wouldn't mind a game game built exclusively on the frog transformation. There's also a lot of little and not so little references to the other games in the series which is nice.
Overall, a solid game that could have used about 20% trimmed off. It would have been nice to have any kind of reference to this game's previous life as Flying Hamster 2 as I didn't see anything.
I finished in 15:06:15.

I hope it was a good idea to wait for the PC version and it doesn't have more bugs in it. I thought the previous games were all a bit short so I think I'll be ok with the length.
