www.hardcoregaming101.net/dandy-dungeon/Yoshiro Kimura's wacky (as if it could ever be serious) mobile phone puzzle/RPG game: both a satire of and a heartfelt homage to the Japanese gaming industry. I decided to open this thread mostly to say how much I loved this little game and to thank wyrdwad, since while I was looking for info about Onion Games and Kimura, I stumbled on several reviews by him and so managed to better understand what's behind Kimura's games and especially all the references to his previous works and the recurring themes like love and the blend of game and reality. Too bad that it has been published on the new version of the site, since I specifically chose the games it more closely resembles, that is, Segagaga, Moon - RPG Remix Adventure and Level 22: Gary's Misadventures. Oh well, you're reading this now Also I want to point out a problem of the game that I "forgot" to put in the review: it doesn't save progress in a cloud, but instead relies on codes that have to be copied and pasted from the main menu. So, if you have to reset the phone and forget to push the button for codes, you'll lose all of your progress and especially all the stuff you might've bought from the in-game store. Like it happened to me. But I think one day I'll re-download it, because I liked it that much!

Sweet! Always nice to see some love for Kimura's brand of craziness. I'd try it myself... if I had a smartphone. One of these days, I'll upgrade past ol' Flippy. But that day is not today. -Tom

Wasn't Dandy Dungeon the name of the original computer game that inspired Gauntlet?

Wasn't Dandy Dungeon the name of the original computer game that inspired Gauntlet? Apparently it was, but I doubt it was a conscious reference on Kimura's part. You never know though...

For those curious, Dandy Dungeon has received its final update on the 20th of December and is as of now no longer in active development. You can still download and play a version of the game without any in-app purchases or online functionality (in fact, offline play was one of the recent updates). For those who haven't tried it yet, you have until the end of the year, after which it will no longer be available on Google Play or the App Store.

Downloaded it the last possible day, because I just couldn't stand that one game I liked so much could disappear off the face of the earth. I'm only worried because my smartphone is old and needs to be replaced so I'm afraid of losing the data in an eventual backup... And obviously I'm not too fond of restarting it from scratch since without the online functionality and store it would be much harder to obtain the dress sets, weapons and such. Seeing the monster shelf and Dandy Sets wardrobe empty makes me kinda sad...

I'm playing it for the first time. It's a little weird without the store. I really think they should have patched in some way to get riceballs more reliably at least. Also sad that the dungeon spells don't work anymore.
But the core game is *really* good. Like I regret not finding it earlier because it shows how you can do a good mobile game with freemium elements that is still fun to play.

So I found out that Dandy Dungeon has also been released on Steam some time ago: store.steampowered.com/app/1138970/Dandy_Dungeon__Legend_of_Brave_Yamada/I will definitely buy it, however I think I'm going to wait a while since the few reviews say that it's kinda bugged and it's also grindier, Also, just five achievements for defeating the bosses? Can't they add more?

It's also on Switch now. Can we get an updated article that takes into account those versions, especially since the original isn't available anymore?

I wrote the original article, I suppose that I can buy the PC version and talk about eventual differences since I played the phone version a lot (though I missed some dungeon updates when I had to change my smartphone, so it could be not 100% accurate), but at the moment I don't have a Switch and don't mean to buy one. Though I would like to update the article one day and gather more info! The Dandy Dungeon Wiki is pretty much useless but maybe on the dedicated subreddit there's some more stuff...

I'm pretty sure the Steam and Switch versions are just the same outside controls.
